C., Thursday, March 7, 1968 Mary Bryan Parr has been named the 1968 STAR student at Newberry High school, the Newberry County Development Board announced this week. The STAR student is a senior, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Parr. Mary then selected Mrs. Linda B. Darby, teacher at Newberry High, as her STAR teacher, the one who made the greatest contribution to the student’s scholas tic achievement. Both teacher and student now compete for the county STAR titles. President J. Walter Hamm of the Development Board made the presentation. (Sunphoto.) SOUTH CAROLINA JERSEY CATTLE CLUB meets: A number of Newberry county dairymen captured top awards at the annual South Carolina Jersey Cattle Club meeting in Columbia recently: Henry L. Parr Sr., Head- spring Farm, Newberry, winner of three awards: for cows 36 to 42 months of age, for cows 60 months of age and over and highest Ton-of-Gold cow; Henry L. Parr, Jr., Headspring Farm, Newberry, for cows under 30 months of age; C. T. Smith, Newberry, winner of four production awards: For cows 42 to 48 months of age, for cows 48 to 60 months of age, highest lifetime milk production for individual cow and highest lifetime but- terfat production for individual cow; E. B. McLeod. Pinewood, for the most improved production records, and Ed B. Baskin, Bishopville, outgoing president, Jersey Cattle Club. Inquest set in Flemon death Gwen Flemon, a five-year- old Newberry County Negro girl, was killed Sunday morning near Pomaria when struck by an automobile. Newberry County Coroner George Summer said the acci dent occurred at about 8:45 a.m. Sunday on Highway 167 about a quarter of a mile from Pomaria. Coroner Summer said the Flemon child was walking along the highway with her two brothers, Thomas Flemon Jr., 11, and John Earle, three. The coroner listed the par ent as Thomas Flemon Sr. of Route 2, Pomaria. Driver of a 1964 Chevrolet involved in the accident was identified as E. H. Halfacre of Route 2, Columbia. Passenger in the automobile was his wife, Mrs. Leila Mae Ruff Halfacre. The Chevrolet was traveling in the direction of Newberry, the coroner reported. Coroner Summer said an in quest will be held Friday night at 7:30. The accident was investigat ed by Patrolman Duval of the S. C. Highway Dept., Hugh Shannon of the Newberry County Sheriff’s office and Coroner Summer. City Building Permits City building permits issued last week totaled $8325. WITH MEN IN THE SERVICES FT. SILL, OKLA. — Army Private Michael R. Gilliam, 20. son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis H. Gilliam, Route 1, completed an 8-week field artillery basic course Feb. 16 at Ft. Sill. During the course, he was trained in the operation and maintenance of the 105mm and the 155mm towed howitzers. He also received specialized training in firing such weapons as the M-60 machine gun, the M-79 grenade launcher and the 3.5 inch rocket launcher. Army Private Ike L. Suber, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Suber,Route 2, Pomaria, arrived overseas Jan. 5 and was assign ed as a missile crewman in Battery B of the 71st Artillery- 3rd Missile Battalion in Ger many. His wife, Doris, lives at 2608 Matthew St. Marine Private First Class Stephen W. Mills, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Beamon L. Mills of Route 2, was graduated from the eight-week Aviation Mach- inist’e Mate School at Naval Air Technical Training Center, P. K. Fuller, chairman of the Exchange Club's Student of The Month program, presents plaques to Ellen Wil liamson and Jerry Long, selected as the outstanding girl and boy student for February at Newberry High school. ARMY, GERMANY— Army Private Thomas I. Long, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira B. Long, Route 3, Pomaria, was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany, Jan. 27. His wife, Anita, lives on Rt 2, Kinards. GRADUATES FROM AIR FORCE SCHOOL MEMPHIS — Airman Ap prentice James D. Herrin, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Herrin Jr. of Route 3, New berry, was graduated from the Aviation Mechanical Funda mentals School at the Naval Technical Training Center in Memphis, Tenn. The 160 hour course included mathematics, cannon aircraft hardware, mechanical and elec trical physics, aeronautical publications, and the use and application of hand tools.
