DOLLARS AND CENTS
“Dollars and Cents in Feed
ing” is the general title of a
Dairy Shortcourse to be of
fered to the dairymen here in
Newberry county. The Short-
course will consist of three
meetings—February 28, March
6 and March 13, respectively,
or starting the last Wednesday
in February and the first two
Wednesdays in March. The
time is 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
This should not interfere with
anyones milking time.
The course will be taught by
the Dairy Extension Specialists

material presented, could very
well add dollars and cents to
your dairy income. Every dairy
man is interested in increased
production per cow. This in
crease might be brought a-
bout by a close survey of the
present ration of the feed you
are now feeding your milking
herd.
On February 28 in the audi
torium of the Newberry Coun
ty Agriculture building at 10
a.m. we will be talking about
“ Forages—The Backbone of
a Dairy Feeding Program.”

PECAN FERTILIZATION
Now is the time to fertilize
your pecan trees. The recom
mended rate is 3 pounds of a
complete fertilizer such as
8-8-8 or 10-10-10 for each inch
of diameter of the trunk meas
ured at breast height. Pecans
require a larger amount of
zinc. This can be supplied in
the form of Zinc Sulfate, ap
plied annually at the rate of
one-half pound for each inch
of diameter measured at
breast height but do not use
more than 15 pounds per

Helpful Tips on
Income Taxes
Q—Last year’s medical ex
penses don’t add up to 3 per
cent of my income. Does that
mean I can’t use the new pro
vision that allows you to de
duct one-half of your medical
insurance premiums?
A—You may deduct one-half
of your medical insurance
premiums up to the maximum
of $150 even though your other
medical expenses do not exceed
the 3 percent income limitation.
However, to take this deduction
you must itemize all your de
ductions such as taxes, contri
butions, and interest expenses.
You can’t deduct your medical
insurance premiums if you
take the standard deduction.
Q—My brother and I provide
over half of our mother’s sup
port. Who gets to claim her?
A—If each of you contribut
ed over 10 percent of your mo
ther’s support and the combin
ed total adds up to over half
of her total support then either
of you may claim her as a de
pendent. A special declaration
must be completed by the one
not claiming the exemption and
sent in with the return of the
one who claims the exemption.
Q—I just filed my 1967 re
turn. What records should I
keep in case I’m audited.
A.—Keep whatever you need
to substantiate the income and
deductions on your return. Can
celled checks, paid bills, Forms
W-2, and 1099, bank books and
similar records will be helpful.
Q—If I send in my return
now, how long will it take to
get my refund?
A—Accurate and complete
returns are normally processed
and the refund issued within
five or six weeks.
Q—My son is going to school
under the G. I. Bill. Will those
benefits lose us the exemption
we take for him?
A—Benefits received by your

to be included as part of his
support. Determine his total
support requirement for the
year and if you provided more
than half of this then you are
still entitled to claim him as
long as the other dependency
tests are met.
q—i s alimony considered as
taxable income?
Yes, alimony is taxable in
come to the recipient and should
be reported. Payments specified
in a divorce court decree for
child support, however, are not
taxable.
Q—One of my wedding gifts
was shares of stock. Do I have
to report this?
A.—no you do not have to
report gifts on your income tax
return. However, any dividends
on the stock or profits from the
sale of the stock must be re
ported by you.
q—l was just billed for taxes
I paid last month. What should
I do?
A—Write the office which
sent you the bill telling them
when you made your last pay
ment and where it was sent. It
is possible that your payment
got separated from the return
or notice accompanying it.
Q—I had several employers
last year. Do you need all of
my W-2 statements or just the
totals ?
A—A W-2 for each job held
should be attached to your re
turn. Processing of your return
along with issuance of any re
