C., Thursday, Feb. 22 1968—PAGE 5 Loren Young, Southeastern Director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was guest speaker at a supper meeting held last Friday night at Newberry Inn. Mr. Young discussed the foundation and pur pose of the organization, and expressed interest in seeing the movement expand onto the campus of Newberry college and throughout the high schools of the county. ARMY, VIETNAM— Army Specialist Four John M Summer, 21, son of Mrs. Evelyn M. Summer, 902 Caldwell St., is takin part in “Operation Yellowstone” in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division. The operation began Dec. 8 in an area of heavy jungle 60 miles northwest of Saigon known as War Zone C. Search and destroy missions are being conducted in the area with support from helicopters artillery, armor and mechaniz ed units. U. S. and Vietnamese infan trymen involved in the opera tion are attempting to cut off and destroy enemy units using the area as a supply route from the north and a stoppage point for weapons, ammunition and food. Spec. Summer is a radio op erator assigned to the 3rd Bat talion, 22nd Infantry of the division’s 3rd Brigade near Dau Tieng. New service at SCN bank Installation has been com pleted at the South Carolina National Bank’s Main Office of a “Community News” bulletin board and a “Financial News” bulletin board. In making this announcement W. J. Raffield, V.P. sa ; d: “These bulletin boards are a part of SCN’s continuing ef forts to bring the best in bank ing services to Newberry and Newberry County citizens.” Current financial informa tion will be posted on the “Financial News” bulletin board. This will include notices of new bond and government issues as well as a listing of anticipated returns from other investment sources. Citizens of Newberry and Newberry county are invited to submit announcements of gen eral interest to be placed on the “Community News” Bul letin board. These could include club meeting notices, charity events, church meetings and many other items the citizens of this area would like to know. There is no charge for this ser vice Raffield added: “We sincere ly hope full use will be made of these bulletin boards as they were installed as a source of information for everybody.” Maphis out as football coach Dr. A. G. D. Wiles, Newberry College president, said today that Don W. Maphis has with drawn as Newberry’s new head football coach because of ill ness. Maphis, 35, was appointed Jan. 18 to succeed Harvey B. Kirkland* He was to have come to Newberry Feb. 1 from Cat awba College, Salisbury, N. C. but became ill. The ailment was not thought serious but Dr. Wiles said Maphis has inform ed him that doctors now have ordered him to take an ex tended rest. He is presently hospitalized. The former West Virginia athlete has been at Catawba College for the past six years. He has been Catawba’s line coach and dean of students. He was named to the New berry post after Kirkland’s res ignation as the Indians’ foot ball mentor. Dr. Wiles said the committee which recommended Maphis for the position has been re activated and is in touch with several prospective candidates for the coaching job. Deadline for summer cabins Applications for vacation cabins at South Carolina’s state parks this summer are still being accepted, the De partment of Parks, Recreation and Tourism said today. The deadline for applications is March 1. The low-cost vacation cabins are located at Oconee, Pleasant Ridge and Table Rock in the mountains; Cheraw, Poinsett, Santee and Givhans Ferry in the central part of the state; and Myrtle Beach, Edisto and Hunting Island state parks on the coast. Application forms and fold ers describing the parks are available by writing the Parks Division; Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism; P. 0. Box 1358, Columbia 29202. Applications should state the park and date preferences with as many alternate choices as possible. The cabins will be assigned at a public drawing to be held shortly after March first. Marriages John Wayne Nichols of New berry and Delores Smith, of Batesburg, were married on January 12 at Newberry. Larry Ralph Minick of New berry and Linda Marie Lowman of Irmo, were married at New berry on February 2. Leonard B. Vinson and Lit tle Pound Jones of Lexington, were married at Newberry by Probate Judge Frank Ward on February 9. Health Dept, to explain regulations A television program to ex plain why there are food ser vice regulations and their im portance in maintaining good health in South Carolina will be shown Thursday, February 22 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. “Food Protection ... A pro gram in Understanding” is be ing presented by the State Board of Health over closed circuit educational television at Newberry High School. A food sanitarian will be present at the school to ans wer any questions from viewers at the end of the film.
