Dr. Birch Rambo
be at Aveleigh
Dr. V. Birch Rambo, a physi
cian who has spent three years
in the Congo as a Presbyterian
U. S. missionary will speak at
Aveleigh Presbyterian Church
on Sunday night, February 18,
at 7:30 o’clock. Other Presby
terian churches participating in
Dr. Rambo’s visit to Newberry
are Queens Memorial, Smyrna,
and Little River-Dominick.
Certified by the American
Board of Surgery, Dr. Rambo
has been serving as a medical
missionary in Bulape, South
Central Congo, where he oper
ates a “bush” hospital and
visits four dispensaries by air.
Dr. Rambo says, “The patients
are appreciative beyond meas
ure. One dignified yet humble
grandfather, whose old age ar
thritic knees I treated with
aspirin, waited for me in the
path to silently present me with
a token of his gratitude—two
eggs. It broke my heart to take
them, but one cannot refuse
such a gift.”
•Born n India to a missionary
couple, Dr. Rambo received his
high school diploma in India at
Kodaikanal School. However, he
came to the United States for
his college and medical work.
He graduated from Bethany
College “summa cum laude,”
attended the School of Medicine
at University of Pennsylvania
for his M.D., and completed 5
years of residency in general
surgery at the Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania. Be
fore going into the field in 1964,
Dr. Rambo was a surgeon at
the Cannon Memorial Hospital
in Banner Elk, N. C.
Dr. Rambo is married to the
former Margaret Gordon, of
Banner Elk and they have three
children, Beth, Bill, and Jane.
The Rambo family is living at
Mission Haven in Decatur, Ga.
during furlpugh, and plan to
return to the Congo in June
of this year.
The public is cordially invit

work in the Congo Sunday at
7:30 p.m. at Aveleigh.
Mill overseer
dies suddenly
Carl Frank Suttles, 44, of
709 O’Neal street, died at his
home Thursday after a sudden
illness.
He was a son of the late W.
W. and Grace Briggs Suttles
and was a member of West End
Baptist church here. He was
overseer of the weave room of
Newberry Mills and was a
charter member of Drayton
Masonic Lodge. He was a World
II and Korean war veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Bernice Allen Suttles; three
daughters, Mrs. Patsy Jean
Brewington, Spartanburg, Deb
ra Ann and Robie Gail Suttles
of the home; a son Carl Frank
Suttles Jr. of Spartanburg and
a brother, Ralph Suttles of
Spartanburg.
Funeral services were con
ducted Saturday in Spartanburg
by Rev. Ralph Rhyne and Rev.
Heyward Cromer. Burial was
in Greenlawn Memorial Gard
ens.
500 attend party
for Thurmond
Over 500 persons attended
the autograph party held at the
home of Dr. and Mrs. R. E.
Livingston last Friday.
Purchase of 224 copies of
“Rebel Senator” by Alberta
Lachicotte of Charleston and
Georgetown, were autographed
by Senator Thurmond, as well as
a number of others for those
who had previously purchased
the book.
One-half of the proceeds of
the book sale will go to the
Jean Crouch Thurmond Schol
arship Fund at Winthrop Col
lege. The scholarship was pro
vided by the senator in memory
of his late wife.
Actor Jim Davis, the star of “The Road Hustlers, 1 ' is
shown here with starlet Vickie Carroll in a scene from
the South Carolina made motion picture. Davis, Scott
Brady and a host of other Hollywood celebrities will be
on hand for the world premiere of the film on February
15 at Columbia’s Palmetto Theatre. The picture will be
shown at the Ritz theatre here February 22-24.

Forrest Carpenter, son of
Mrs. E. A. Carpenter of this
city, a technician involved in
making tht film “Road Hust
lers” on Lake Murray, became
part of the action by chance.
During the filming of a high
speed boat chase on the lake,
Carpenter volunteered to dou
ble for one of the players, a
regular stunt man, who had
been injured in an earlier mis
hap. There was no time to se
cure an additional stuntman.
After a number of practice
runs, everything was in readi
ness for the filming. As the
run got underway an underwat
er explosion planned to be set
off just after the boat cleared
was to have been set off. How
ever the charge fired prema
turely and blasted the rear of
the boat sending one man to
the hospital for a month, and
throwing Carpenter into the
water.

The film will show at the Ritz
Theatre next Thursday, Friday
and Saturday.

$500 gift from
Brotherhood
Grants totaling $40,500 have
been made to 81 North Ameri
can Lutheran institutions of
higher learning by Lutheran
Brotherhood, a fraternal insur
ance society.
Newberry College’s President
A. G. D. Wiles accepted the
$500 grant in early February
on behalf of his school from
Hoyle Allison of Columbia, Lu
theran Brotherhood general
agent.
“ Lutheran Brotherhood is
vitally interested in all Luth
eran institutions of higher
learning, which can be seen
smybolical.ly in these grants,”
states A. Herbert Nelson, pres
ident of the society.
In an effort to give across-
the-board financial assistance,
Mr. Nelson said that $500 was
made available to each of 81
schools listed in Lutheran Bro
therhood’s 1967-69 Lutheran
Higher Education Directory.
