was done, Martin Luther K>ing
stood clearly exposed as an
apostle of violence. But not a
word of it appeared the next
day or in the days that follow
ed, in the news media which
had ballooned Martin Luther
King into the public eye.
In conclusion, Congressman
Ashbrook offered this summary
“ . . . I believe that any think
ing American who will study
King’s words must conclude as
I have that Martin Luther King
is disloyal to the United States.
He maligned his country with
lies and accusations that come
straight from the Communist
Party line. A strong statement,
you say? Listen to what Dr.
King said: He praised Ho Chi
Minh as ‘the only true leader
of the Vietnamese people’. He
condemned the United States
as the ‘greatest purveyor of
violence in the world today’,
and likened our country to Hit
ler’s Germany. He condemned
the late President Diem as
‘one of the most vicious modern
dictators ’and threw out wild
charges to the effect that the
United States may have killed
one million children in Vietnam.
He conjured up a falsehood that
the United States was conduct
ing a napalm war in Peru so
that he could denounce it. He
said we have no honorable in
tentions in Vietnam, and that ^
our plan is to occupy it as an
American colony. These, said
Congressman Ashbrook, “are
but a few of the wild accusa
tions voiced by Martin Luther
King, who many people have
been led to believe is a man of
peace.”
A lot of water has passed
over the dam—and a lot of
blood has run in the streets—
since Bobby Kennedy visited
King in the Birmingham jail
just before Election Day in
1960. Some will say that the
press and the politicians have
“used” Dr. King. It is, in truth
perhaps the other way around
—he has used THEM as willing
tools, in exchange for great

Scurry honored

B. M. Scurry, long time num
ber and active worker of Ave-
leigh Presbyterian church, was
elected Elder Emeritus of the
church at a recent congrega
tional meeting. His name was
presented for the honor by El
der T. William Hunter, as fol
lows:
“When I became a member
of this church some 50 years
ago, I found among its member
ship a distinguished young
Christian gentleman who at
that time was taking a leading
part in all church activities. I
later learned that this individ
ual moved from Chappells to
Newberry in 1905 and became a
member of this church at that
time. Since that time up to the
present, with a few minor ex
ceptions when he was away
from Newberry, he has served
his church well and faithfully
in too many various capacities
to name. Some include 15 years
as superintendent of Sunday
School, many years as teacher
of the Men’s Bible class, a
leader in the formation of sev
eral outpost churches and all
other church activities.
“I am sure Dr. Kerr, Rev.
Dendy, Rev. Calcote and the
present minister all received a
great deal of satisfaction out
of having such an outstanding
individual in their congrega
tions.
“I consider it a great honor,
high privilege and indeed a
pleasure to present the name
of B. M. Scurry in nomination
for the position of Elder Em
eritus of this Church.”
S. M. Price's
father dies
Eldred McGowan Price, 82,
died Sunday at his home near
McCormick after several years
of declining health. Among his
survivors is a son, Samuel M.
Price of this city.
Funeral services were con
ducted Monday at Troy ARP
church by Rev. J. H. Buzhardt
and Rev. Ralph Rhyne. Burial
was in Troy cemetery.
