Son killed;
father dies
of coronary
Charles A. Porter, 37, died
suddenly at his home on Henry
Avenue about 10:15 p. m. Fri
day of an accidental gunshot
wound and his 70-year old fa
ther, 0. A. (Jake) Porter suf
fered a heart attack while driv
ing to his son’s home after
hearing of the death.
Newberry County Coroner
Geo. Summer said the younger
Porter, a truck driver, had ap
parently reached into the closet
to hang up some clothes and
bumped the shotgun against
the closet wall, causing the
weapon to fire accidently.
The victim’s father died
from a heart attack while at
the wheel of his car as he was
rushing to his son’s home. The
Coroner said Porter’s car roll
ed into the front yard of his
son’s home and struck a tree
following the heart attack.
Coroner ' Summer said he
ruled the death due to an ac
cidental gunshot wound and
no inquest would be held.
A. 0. Porter was born in
Alabama, son of the late Jas.
R. and Etta Childress Porter.
He w r as a lumberman and had
been a groceryman.. He was
a member of the First
Baptist church.
He is survived by his wife.
Mrs. Elizabeth G. Porter; two
sons, AlvinD. Porter of Van
Nuys, Calif, and J. Carl Por
ter of Newberry; one daughter,
Mrs. J. A. Merck of Greenville;
four brothers, Doyle Porter, J.
H. Porter and Jesse Porter, all
of Pickens, and Ernest Porter
of Easley.
Charles Porter was born in
Pickens county, the son of Mrs.
Elizabeth Garrett Porter and
the late 0. A. Porter. He was
a lumber man and was in the
trucking business. He served
in the U. S. Army, Airborne,
from 1952 to 1954. He was a
member of The First Baptist
church.

Nineteen sixty-seven was the
year for several municipal el
ections. Clarence A. Shealy Jr.
was elected mayor of the city
of Newberry. He had served as
alderman and mayor pro-tem
for two terms. Ernest H. Lay-
ton, who was a member of city
council for 10 years and ten
years as mayor did not offer
for reelection.
The six aldermen are Carman
Bouknight, L. C. Gardner, Jr.,
Cecil E. Kinard. and Claude
W Partain, Democrats and C.
D. Coleman and Preston Mc-
Alhany, Republicans.
At Prosperity Walter Hamm,

Wednesday night after a long
illness. Born in this county,
he was a son of the late John
W. and Mattie Fulmer Wise.
He was a grocery and service
station attendant, a member of
Colony Lutheran church and a
former member of the church
council.
He is survived by a sister,
Mrs. C. B. Metts of Prosperity;
three brothers, Claude K. and
George N. Wise, both of West
Columbia, and Fred Wise of
Spartanburg.

Friday from his church with
Rev. J. Virgil Long conducting
the service. Burial followed in
the church cemetery.
Mrs. Ada Kinard
dies Monday
Mrs. Ada Wilson Kinard,
widow of Wilbur W. Kinard of
3259 College Street extension,
died early Monday morning at
the Newberry County Memorial
hospital after a long illness.
Born in this county, she was
the daughter of the late T. J.
and Sally Epps Wilson. She
was a member of Bachman
Chapel Lutheran church and a
life member of the LCW.
Surviving are three sons, T.
J. Kinard, Earl Kinard, and
Karl Kinard, all of Prosperity;
three daughters, Mrs. D. C.
Cook, Mrs. W. E. Stuck, both
of Prosperity and Mrs J. S.
Nichols of Newberry; two sis
ters, Mrs. Essie Halfacre and
Mrs. Thelma Long, both of this
city; a brother, D. Clyde Wil
son of Prosperity.
Funeral services were held
at her church, conducted by
Rev. Wiliam H. Link, Dr.
Grady Cooper and Rev. J. L.
Drafts. Burial was i n the
church cemetery.
Caldwell dies
at VA hospital
James A. Caldwell, 65, died
Sunday at the VA hospital in
Augusta, Ga. after a long ill
ness.
Mr. Caldwell was born in
this county, the son of the late
John Arthur and Tillie Huiet
Caldwell. He served in the U.
S. Air Force during World
War II and prior to that time
he was a salesman for the
Peeples Drug Co., in Washing
ton, D. C.
He is survived by an aunt,
Mrs. S. H. McLean of Columbia
and a number of nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded to the
grave by two sisters, Mrs. E.
C. Folk and Mrs. J. R. Clary
and one brother, Huiet Cald
well.
Funeral services were held
Monday at Whitaker Funeral
Home by Dr H. A. McCullough.
Burial was in Rosemont ceme
tery.

dies in N. C.
A. Alvin Kempson, 75, of
Norlina, N. C. died Thursday.
He was born in this county,
son of the late H. Lee and
Minnie O. Kempson. Survivors
include his widow, four sons,
three daughters; a brother, J.
Luther Kempson of Columbia;
and three sisters, Mrs. Willie
Feagle of Saluda, Mrs. Whit
Lee Fowler of Fayetteville, N.
C., and Mrs. A. P. Lou of
Columbia.
