C., Thursday, December 20, 1967 cup 1-1/2 cups (3/4 pound) chopped candied cherries — 1 ied pineapple — 1/2 cup (1/4 - 1/2 (1/2 pound) chopped candle pound) chopped candied citron — 1/2 cup (1/4 pound) chopped candied lemon peel — 1/2 cup (1/4 pound) chopped candied organge peel — 1 cup light raisins — 1 cup chopped walnuts — 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour — 1 cup butter or margarine — 1 cup sugar — 4 eggs — 1/4 cup light corn syr up — 1/4 cup orange juice — 1/4 cup sherry — Combine fruits and nuts; coat well with 1 cup of the flour. Cream butter or margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beat in well after each. Combine corn syrup, orange juice and sherry; add alternately with remaining flour to creamed mixture. Fold in fruits and nuts. Pour batter into well-greased baking pans of desired shapes. For 5-12 cup ring molds, bake 75 to 85 minutes at 275 degrees. For 4-1- 2 x 2-5/8 x 2 inch pans bake 60 or 70 minutes at 275 degrees. CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS The origin of many Christ mas customs can be traced back to prehistoric times. .Some Pagan customs were modified to fit into the Christian observ ances. INDIAN CRANBERRIES The American Indians made a paste from cranberries called "Pemmican”. This was used as a poultice for cuts and wounds. They used the juice of the berry for red dye. Eventually the cranberry was to become a tradition as part of the Christ mas menu. IN NEW ZEALAND New Zealanders spend their Christmas Day in much the same way as it is in the United States and Europe. CHURCH SERVICES In his diary, Samuel Pepys tells that in 1662 he walked to church where he heard an exceptionally long sermon. Also, three years later, after the Christmas ad dress, he saw a wedding at the church. On this holiday in 1666, Pepys wrote that his wife stayed in bed, as she had sat up until 4 o’clock that morning, watching her "mayde” make the mince pies. In contrast, "I, to church, where our parson Mills made a good sermon ...thanks to God Al- mighty, for the goodness of my condition at this day." CALM CHILDREN Active children become more exhuberant with the coming of the Christmas season. Themad rush of shopping and holiday preparations stimulates a child’s emotions. Child specialists believe that a quiet atmosphere and ex plaining the joys of the holiday will help them, and help you have a more peaceful season. We should spend more time getting children ready for a reverent Christmas rather than a commercial one. When the entire family pause to under stand the true meaning of Christmas, it will be a jov to all. INFORM FRIENDS It is foolish to be bashful about writing information letters — information concern ing children’s ages and interests is helpful and welcome to per sons you know will be sending gifts. Children’s interests change from year to year. If only the child's age is known, it is pos sible for the giver to receive helpful advice from clerks. FOR THE LADY Decorate the cover of a large plastic dish with colored shells. Fill the dish with cotton powder puffs — get a package of as sorted colors.
