FUN FOR KIDS . . . Make-and-play toys are high on the
youngsters’ gift lists this holiday season. One such unit enables
kids to make all sorts of creepy people and things, using a
plastic liquid that is heated and poured into a mold. The heat
ing unit is UL-approved.
Alice Barr stepped behind
the notions counter, slipped off
her shoes and reached down to
soothe the sore muscles of her
instep.
Four more hours and it
would be all over. Hooray! If
she could still move she would
surely dance a jig!
"Alice, Alice,” came the call.
"Change on number two.”
"I’m coming. I’m coming.
Just a moment.”
"Hey, Alice, we need some
dimes on five. We can hardly
make any change at all.”
Alice tossed the hair from
her eyes with a shake of her
blonde head. "You’renext,five.
Just cool it for a moment
or two.”
"The guy who said Christ
mas is too commercial has my
vote”, she muttered to herself
as she went from two to five,
and then to four, and then to
pacing the floor again.
People!
Alice had been around a
long time. She felt she knew
people pretty well. Just looking
about now, she spotted people
that she saw frequently during
the year. They always boughi

seemed, they hardly glanced al

it up, look at it, buy it. Many
of these people had charge ac
counts. It took some of them
so long to pay up, Alice knew
they spent "over their heads”
each Christmas season.
Why can’t people be as sensi
ble at Christmas as they are the
rest of the year, she wondered.
With no one calling for her
at the moment, Alice stepped
behind the candy counter and
took off her shoes. She rubbed
sore foot against sore foot. "I
wonder, Alice,” she said almost
aloud, "if you would feel dif
ferently if you had someone—
anyone — that you cared
about.” I would not be foolish,
she reassured herself. "I’m too
level-headed. I’d give a sensible
gift. Something inexpensive.
Something useful. ”
"Alice, check on two,” came

the call.
The hours wore away.
Finally, the doors were shut
and the shades drawn. One by
one, the slow customers were
let through and finally the
clerks were dashing madly
about, each hurrying to be
among the first to check out
and head for a holiday at
home.
Alice, of course, was among
the last to finish. She was
always among the last. But,
she didn’t care. She had only
the apartment to go to, and
no plans for any part of the
holiday.
No Hurry
The manager let her out

Alice stood watching the shop
pers hurrying homeward. She
turned and idly looked at the
store windows. Some of them
were half-empty. Most of the
toys were gone — remaining
were a drum, a small wagon
and a little train set — which
someone had failed to dis
connect. The engine and three
cars scooted merrily around
the track.
Alice knocked on the door
for several minutes before the
manager came. "Mr. Weddle,
I want that train set. Please
help me box it.”
Mr. Weddle wrinkled his
brows, and without a word
reached under a counter for
the box.
Outside again, Alice stood
on the corner, hugging the
train set as if it were some
very precious item. The streets
were more deserted now. And,
people seemed in more of a
hurry than ever.
Finally, an elderly woman
and a little boy came by. The
lad was whistling "Jingle
Bells.” He stopped abruptly
when Alice shoved the package
into his hands. " Here, little
boy. Take this home with you,
and don’t open it until tomor
row.
She turned away, hurrying
herself now, suddenly aware
that she was whistling "Jingle
Bells” and that for some rea
son, her feet didn’t seem to
bother her at all.
May true joy be yours this Christmas!
