Festive desserts and traditional drinks are a familiar
part of the Christmas observance.
Turkey on Christmas Day is an American specialty.
Yet no treats are more associated with the holiday than
plum pudding and mince pie.
The original plum pud
ding, tradition says, was
cooked up by an English
hunting party lost in the
woods on Christmas Eve.
It consisted of deer meat
and a mixed variety of
game animals, birds’ eggs,
dried plums, ale, brandy,
sugar and flour.
Mince pie, we arc told,
was created by the Puritans
and served with a tin y
figure of the Christ child in
its center. The earliest
known recipe dates to the
reign of James I in the 1 7 th
Century — and called for
beef tongue, chopped chick
en, eggs, raisins, orange
and lemon peelings, sugar
and an assortment of
spices.
Hot punches have al
ways been popular in Eng
land and are regaining
some favor in America.
A mild drink is spiced
tea with cloves, cinnamon
and nutmeg added before
brewing. A bit more glow
ing is mulled cider, sim
mered with spices and
served with floating orange
slivers. And finally, the tra
ditional Tom and Jerry,

Chosen City
Once Derided
We recognize Nazareth as
"the chosen city” and consider
it one of the holiest places in
Christendom. Such was not
always the case.
Nazareth was considered so
insignificant that the term
"Nazarene” was applied to Je
sus Christ in derision.
When Jesus called his first
disciples, among them was
Philip of Bethsaida. Philip went
to Nathanael and said, "We
have discovered the one about
whom our scriptures speak. He
is Jesus of Nazareth, the son of
Joseph.”
And Nathanael replied,
"Can anything good come out
of Nazareth?”
After Jesus had spoken to
him, Nathanael exclaimed,
"Thou are the Son of God;
Thou art the King of Israel.”
And Nathanael returned to
Nazareth with a few chosen dis
ciples as Jesus began his minis
try in the chosen city.
MAKE A DOLLHOUSE
An old wooden bookcase
can be turned into a little
girfs delight. Clean it up
and sand it down. Add wood
or heavy cardboard parti
tions for separate rooms.
Paint the separate "rooms”
in playful colors. Fill it with
furniture, a new Christmas
doll, and watch her eyes
sparkle on Christmas morn
ing.
THE MUSIC BOX
The music box has been a
popular Christmas gift item
since the 19th Century. Music
boxes for milady hold every
thing from jewelry to precious
perfumes. Children’s toys of
various shapes and sizes offer
a variety of tunes. Hit item of
this season, of course, is the
box which gives out with the
tinkly strains of Christmas
carols.
