C., Thursday, Decemberr 20,1967—SEC A—PAGE 19 College groups cheer children at Christmas Without much fanfare but with plenty of spirit, students at Newberry College have been bringing Christmas cheer to dozens of children in the New berry area. On their own initia tive, they have figured out ways to put some holiday gai ety into a number of drab young lives. Members of Delta Chi soror ity, a social group, several weeks ago undertook a special service project for retarded children. Three other campus groups, Beta Phi service fra ternity, the Methodist Student Movement and the Lutheran Student Association, concentra ted on providing gifts and en tertainment for dependent boys and girls. Delta Chi's Christmas belles recently sought out Paul K. Fuller, president of the New berry County Association For Retarded Children, to see what work needed doing. As a result of the conversation they deter mined to raise funds for the association’s work. A campus contest was the immediate result. Students were asked to elect a “ Mr. Snow man," voting for the candidates of various campus organiza tions by dropping coins into jars bearing the contestants’ names. Each penny counted as one vote. Arnold Kellner, a senior from Spartanburg, won the title. He got a trophy and a “Mr. Snowman" sweatshirt. More important, Delta Chi got $105.03, far more than antici pated. Part of the proceeds went for a party last week at Speers Street Recreation cen ter, attended by 50 members of the special education classes at Boundary Street school. Special education students from Whitmire were to have been there, too, but a schedul ing problem prevented their coming. The Delta Chis planned to send them their Christmas candy and favors. The sorority still has more than $80 of the “Mr. Snowman” money. Members plan to give it to the Newberry County As sociation for Retarded Children for use as needed. Last week’s project by Beta Phi and the Methodist and Lu theran groups consisted of a party on campus for children from Boys’ Farm and the Ep- worth Children’s Home in Col umbia. The children toured the campus, stayed for dinner, at tended parties in Smeltzer hall and Kaufmann hall, and joined with students in caroling on the campus quadrangle. The Delta Chis have taken on another permanent project after talking with Fuller, who is Newberry County recreation director as well as head of the association for Retarded Child ren. Fuller said that it has been difficult to get enough parents to attend the Junior Teen Club Friday evening programs at the Speers Street Center. But each Friday, three Delta Chi mem bers have been coming to the center and doing a nexcellent job as chaperones. We, the people of Newberry County, have had many bless ings throughout the year, Committee hears reports A very enthusiastic and in formative meeting of the Beau tification Committee was held Thursday afternoon at City Hall. Mrs. Richard L. Baker, chair man, opened the meeting with prayer. The Honorable C. A. Shealy, Jr., mayor of Newberry, spoke to the group congratulating them on winning the various awards for beautification, say ing he was proud of the work accomplished and of the plans for future efforts in beautifi cation of the city and county. Newberry county is one of the nine counties in South Carolina eligible to receive the Governor’s Trophy and is one of the few counties to re ceive a trophy two years in succession. He promised h i s wholehearted cooperation in any way to help realize the goal the Committee has set. Martyn Cavanaugh reminded the chairman that all reports sent in must be postmarked by December 31, 1967. He report ed on the trash dumps in the county, saying others will soon be available. A letter was read from Mrs. Peggy Smith Beautification supervisor for South Carolina in which she said, “It is very encouraging to me to vihit in counties like yours and see the tremendous progress that is being made . . . Congratula tions again to you and good luck in the contest for the Tro phy." Skipper Harmon reported that he had moved 60 old cars putting them in a gully in the county which has been covered with dirt. A1 Busby told of the work of the young people in the county. All of the 4-H Clubs had a tree planting (Yellow Poplar) ceremony on Arbor Dav followed by a conservation and beautification program. There are 34 4-H clubs with 1,400 members. Two Senior 4-H Clubs and 22 Adult Extension Homemaker Clubs are working now on a project to beautify the mail boxes in the county. The Pomaria 4-H club has begun beautifying the grounds around the marker where the first Lutheran Seminary in South Carolina was originated. Recently a radio program on Beautification was given over WKDK by Mrs. Mildred K. Holliday and Mrs. Sadie Crooks. Mr. Ken Riebe announced that the city is now stamping their cards that are sent out and that a stamp saying “Keep Newberry Clean” has been or dered. James D. Brown told of the Boy and Girl Scouts going over the town on Saturday morning picking up the beer cans, bot tles and other trash that peo ple had, unthinkingly, thrown on the streets, marring the beauty of the town.
