'LOST GENERATION’
You probably don’t think it
could have happened in our coun
try but it did. An entire genera
tion of American children grew
up without Christmas! From 1659-
1681 puritan leaders banned
Christmas celebrations. The dis
putes arose over the abuses of
Christmas; these abuses reached
a fever pitch in 17th century
England and the result was the
forbidding of the yuletide cere
monies by the puritan parliament
in 1644.
This is one of numerous ex
amples to illustrate the point that
the course of Christmas celebra
tions has not run as smoothly as
one might ordinarily think.
USEFUL GIFT
A luxury item needn’t be use
less. If it is, it’s not a luxury—
it’s a waste. So keep in mind the
basic needs of your recipient.
Thus, instead of giving mom a
dust-gathering figurine, why not
treat her to some gleaming stain
less steel casserole dishes?
They’re not only useful, but—
because stainless steel is a lot
easier to clean than light, cheaper
metals—it will save her work
all year long.
GIFT GIVING
The exchange of presents at
Christmas is not a tradition of
modern vintage. In early times,
even before Christianity, priests
urged their pagan followers to ex
change gifts at the New Year.
At first, the gifts were collected
by the priests who then distri
buted them to the poor. With
Christianity, the exchange of gifts
was changed to Christmas and the
gift-giving tradition has grown
with the progress of Christianity.

green on the hall table makes
the foyer scene more cozy.

utes, in colors ranging from
pale gold, silver and copper
to the traditional Christmas
hues of white, red and green.
COOKIE CUSTOM
The popularity of cakes and
cookies at Christmas may be a
survival of an early Roman cus
tom. On Saturanla, the Roman
mid-winter holiday, each Roman
senator was given a confection
to celebrate the coming of spring.
The delightful custom of decora
tive sweets continued into Chris
tian times. A German favorite
is Pfefferkuchen, a hard, round,
spicy cookie made in great quan
tity at Christmas. Scandinavian
women spend days baking pas
tries for the holidays. French like
cakes baked in the form of a choc
olate Yule log and Rumanians
make their cakes in folds, sym
bolic of the swaddling clothes of
the Christ Child.
"NACIMENTOS”
In Spain the Nativity scene
is so popular that vendors set
up stands before the holiday.
They offer colorful clay, wood
and cardboard figures which
are arranged into Nativity
scenes, known locally as
"Helenes” or "Nacimientos”.
In some villages it is custom
to award a prize for the best
arrangement of a Belenes.
A small carved figure of the
Madonna and Child is the
proud possession of the Bene
dictine Monastery of Mon-
sterrat near Barcelona. It is
believed that it was carved by
St. Luke and brought to Spain
by St Peter in 30 A. D.
