Is Graduated
Kerry Lamar Epting, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph L. Epting
of Elm Street, Prosperity, re
ceived the Bachelor of Science
degree from Berry College,
Rome, Georgia, at exercises on
Sunday, December 10. Epting
completed his academic work
last summer, but no graduation
exercises were held at that
time. He is married to the for
mer Cynthia Jordan of Way-
cross Ga., and they have one
daughter Stephanie. Epting is
presently engaged in teaching
industrial arts in the public
schools of Columbus, Georgia,
where he and his family now
reside.
Mr Epting’s mother, Mrs.
Elizabeth D. Epting and his
brother, Scott, along with his
maternal grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. J. Ray Dawkins of New
berry, attended the graduation
exercises. There were 68 can
didates for degrees, making
this the largest winter quartei
graduating class in Berry
College’s history.
Trash disposal
program is
county asset
“Newberry County’s Rural
Garbage and Trash Disposal
Program is a definite asset to
the County citizens,” according
to A. F. Busby, Newberry coun
ty agent.
A total of seven dumping
sites have been established at
strategic locations throughout
the county.
Champion Paper Co, in co
operation with the Newberry
County Beautification Commit
tee, provided the initial dump
ing sites. Others have been pro
vided by Newberry County.
Newberry County is now co-
ope.’ating in maintaining these
dumping sites.
A good illustration is the
dumping site located on the
property of H. M. Hentz and
Son located near Silverstreet.
The initial site has been in
use for several months and has
now been completely filled.
The area residents have been
most cooperative in dumping
trash and garbage into the pre
pared pit and not littering the
adjacent area. Now that the
pit is filled, county-owned
equipment has covered the fill
ed pit with dirt so that it does
not remain an unsightly area.
A new dumping site has now
been prepared alongside the or
iginal pit.
County Agent Busby urges
all county residents to use the
approved dumping sites. Co
operation is urged, however,
not to use these sites for dis
posal of dead animals. Live
stock lost due to disease should
be promptly buried so as to pre
vent further spread of disease.
“In our opinion, the New
berry County ‘Beautification
Committee, Newberry county
officials and cooperating indus
tries, such as Champion Paper
Co., are to be commended for
their efforts in providing and
maintaining trash dumping
sites for our citizens’ use,” Mr.
Busby concludes. “ Everyone
should cooperate in using these
facilities properly. In so doing
we will make Newberry county
a much more attractive and
healthy place in which to live.”
CHINESE NEW YEAR
In ancient China, the observ
ance of the New Year lasted
not a day, but for 15 days.
Festivities began on the first
day of the new moon and were
climaxed two weeks later by
"Teng Chieh,” the Feast of
Lanterns.
