a pre-release luncheon for re
ligious news editors, at which
time the “alcoholic” study was
made public?
Once again the NCC has
demonstrated that it is not
really interested in the separ
ation of church and state. Once
again, the Council has shown
that it can speak with a forked
tongue without its collectivist
conscience being bothered. Is
it any wonder that so many
concerned church members find
it impossible to support a de
nomination that feeds the pol
itical activities of the National
Council of Churches?”

fices.
“The 1966-67 Audit Report
of the various County Offices
prepared by Mr. Robert C.
Mays III, CPA, has been re
ceived in detail.
“ Basing out judgment upon
information obtained by actual
visits to the various offices
and data obtained from the
audit, it is our belief that sub
stantially all monies handled
by the various offices have been
properly accounted for.
“We note that the auditor
found an irregularity in the
handling of money by an em
ployee working in the office of
the County Treasurer. After
checking with the Treasurer we
are confident that the matter
referred to by the auditor has
been astisfactorily celared up.
“The Auditor also stated in
his report that records of one
of the County’s Magistrates
was not being properly kept.
We have advised this officer of
the importance of keeping ac
curate records and feel that he
will endeaver to keep better
records in the future.
“Criticism from an unsuc
cessful bidder for a heavy
piece of equipment purchased
by the County Supervisor’s of
fice was directed to members
of this Committee. Investiga
tion of the matter revealed
that there was no basis for
the criticism.
“We recommend to all coun
ty officials who handle money
that where a positive control
of daily cash receipts and dis
bursements has not been prac
ticed that such be instituted as
soon as practical in order to
discourage any temptation to
mishandle money by subordin
ates charged with the respon
sibility of handling money.
“The county officials are to
be commended for a sincere de
sire to perform the duties of
their respective offices with
diligence and dispatch . We
thank each for the courtesies
shown the committee mem
bers. ”

A Kingstree man was sent
enced to serve 18 months in
prison on a guilty plea in
General Sessions Court here
Tuesday on charges of resist
ing an officer and assault and
battery.
Bobby Ansel McCutcheon,
charged with two counts of
resisting arrest, two counts of
assault and battery of a high
and aggravated nature and a
charge of carrying a concealed
weapon, was sentenced to five
years, suspended on service of
18 months and 5 years proba
tion.
Officers told Presiding Judge
Julius B. Ness of Bamberg that
McCutcheon fled Clinton offi
cers and highway patrolmen
w r ere called. The pursuit of Mc
Cutcheon continued for more
than 30 miles in Interstate 26
at speeds of more than 100
miles per hour.
McCutcheon was stopped on
an exit lane of Interstate 26
by Prosperity police Chief D.
H. Willingham, who blocked
the road with his car.
Officers also said McCutch
eon struck a highway patrol
man in the face when attempts
were made to remove him from
the car. A loaded pistol with
the hammer cocked was found
on the floor of the car, officers
said.
Judge Ness in passing sen
tence in the case, said assualts
on law enforcement officers in
South Carolina would not be
tolerated.
A number of guilty pleas
were heard and sentences met
ed out by the court.
Mrs. Cothran
dies Monday
Mrs. Olive Reid Cothran, 74,
widow of Reuben D. Cothran,
died at the Newberry County
Memorial hospital after a long
illness.
She was born in Spartanburg
county, a daughter of the late
A. G. and Lila Npe Reid. She
taught school in Anderson
county before her marriage and
was a member of Newberry
First Baptist church.
Surviving are two daughters,
Mrs. Ralph H. Whitaker, of
Newberry and Mrs. William E.
Thornton of Cayce; two bro
thers, Frank Reid of Landrum
and Dr. Sam D. Reid of Ches-
nee; four sisters, Mrs. Tolly
W. Petty of Landrum, Mrs. W.
P. Roper of Greenville and
Mrs. Fred Reid and Mrs. Frank
Henderson of Greer.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday at Whitaker Funer
al Home by Rev. Anderson Bass
and burial was in Cedar Shoals
Baptist church cemetery in
Anderson county.

Teacher Examinations will be
given February 3 in 18 South
Carolina cities.
Deadline for persons to sub
mit registration forms is Fri
day, January 12. A completed
registration form and fee must
be submitted by January 12th
in order for a person to be reg
istered for the examination.

mon examination and one
teaching area examination is

Postal savers
are sought
Postal Savings was discon
tinued in the U. S. Postal Ser
vice on June 30, 1967.
The local post office will
continue to handle claims for
Postal savings accounts thru
June 30, 1968. After that date,
all funds remaining in postal
savings accounts will be trans
ferred to the U. S. Treasury
and those depositors who have
not closed their accounts will
make claims to the Treasury
Department instead of the post
office department.
There are 38 accounts re
maining at the Newberry office
which have not been closed or
claimed and the postmaster
urges these depositors to close
their accounts.
