ron achieve an exceptionally
meritorious rating.
The Airman, a graduate of
Newberry High School, attend
ed the University of South
Carolina where he is a mem
ber of Phi Mu Alpha. His
father is Nelson Gallagher of
Jonesville.
U. S. ARMY, Vietnam: Army
Private David L. Rutherford,
20, son of Mrs. Mary E. Ruth
erford, Route 2, Pomaria, ar
rived in Vietnam Oct. 23 with
his unit, the 198th Light In
fantry Brigade.
He was one of about 3600
infantrymen who came ashore
at Chu Lai, completing an 11,-
000 mile trip which began at
Ft. Hood, Texas, in early Oct
ober.
Pvt. Rutherford is a rifleman
in Company C, 1st Battalion of
the brigade’s 52nd Infantry.

50, of 715 Floyd St. died early
Sunday morning at Newberry
County Memorial hospital.
She was a native of New
berry county, a daughter of
W. Quincy and Leila Fulmer
Williams. She was a member
of Mayer Memorial Lutheran
church and was a saleslady for
many years.
Funeral services were held
Monday from her church with
Rev. John Koch and Rev. Jas.
Bruce, conducting the service.
Burial was in Rosemont cem
etery.

Dry weather
is increasing
fire danger
Below normal rainfall during
the month of October and lack
of rainfall during the month
of November has caused an in
crease in fire danger, according
to District Forester Legare
M. Duke.
“The heavy frosts of last
week which killed grass and
weeds along with leaf fall and
dry weather has created a bad
fire condition,” said District
Forester Duke. “Before doing
any burning persons should
check on local, county, and
state fire laws.”
“Persons who wish to burn
are urged to use a few simple
safety rules. Burn trash only
in cleared areas well away
from woods and fields, or in
containers such as a wire in
cinerator, or steel drum. The
area should be cleared of all
flamable debris, such as leaves,
pine straw, grass, and weeds.
“Do not burn on windy days.
Even a light breeze can spread
sparks before the person tend
ing the fire can stop them.
“Burn only in the early
morning and late afternoon
when the air is damp.
“Before any burning, a few
common hand tools should be
available, or in the event a
field is burned a tractor and
plow should be available.
