C., Thursday, Nov. 2, 1967 STATE 4-H ACHIEVEMENT LUNCHEON: Several Newber ry County 4-H’ers were honor ed at the State 4-H Achieve ment Luncheon in Columbia on Tuesday. The luncheon is spon sored by the South Carolina Bankers Association, through the cooperation of local banks. In Newberry county they are S. C. National Bank, State Bank and Trust Co. of Newberry and Whitmire and The Bank of Commerce, Prosperity. Ringer, tractor operator and 4H In conducting the devotional part of the program Mr. Watkins used the story of the ten lepers who were cured by the Master and only one came back to thank Him. He said that one of the aims of an ed ucation was to develop a spirit of thanksgiving to God, -teach ers and parents for what they were doing for the young peo ple. A second goal was named as being courteous, watching out for the good of others. The third was to develop a happy disposition, wearing a smile instead of a frown. The audience listened most attentively and appreciatively to Mr. Watkins. Silverstreet School News Chapel was held on October 5 in the Auditoriam. Jewel Bur gess was in charge of devotions. Mr. Paul Kibler, representing the Woodmen of the World pre sented us with a beautiful new flag. He also gave us a certi ficate to present to the best American History student at the end of the year. (Ithink there has been improvements in our history students lately. Keep it up students!) Chapel was also held Oct ober 18 in the cafeteria. Lisa Bishop had devotions. School pictures were taken, on Monday October 2. We are anxiously looking forward to see what we really look like. (Frankly knowing that Mr. Long and the eigth grade were the first to get their pictures made, the camera must have been broken by the time they got to the seventh grade. Sorry about that Mr. Long.) As everybody knows, the Newberry-Saluda County Fair was October 9-14. As usual, Wednesday was school day and all students got out at 1:00 O’clock. Mrs. Werts was absent from school several days due to ill ness of her brother and we are glad that he is doing better now. We all missed her, but we enjoyed having Mrs. Lake as substitute teacher. National Fire Prevention Week was observed October 9- 14. A fire drill was held on Wednesday by the Silverstreet Fire Dept. The building was evacuated in about 45 seconds. The week of October 9-14 was also observed as National School Lunch week. A special lunch was served on Friday all over the County. We want to congratulate our caterer’s for all the delicious meals we’ve had so far. Report cards were given out ort Thursday October 19. I hope everybody was pleased with their grades—Maybe they can be better next time. There was no school on Mon day October 23 because of the teachers taking census. I know that day was enjoyed by all. Miss Workman and the 5th grade had their Chapel program Thursday October 26. We all enjoyed it very much . We have some new STUD ENTS, which are: Dawn and Tammy Richards and Michael, Darlene ahd Jerry Moore. Miss Folk and the 2nd and 3rd Grades have enjoyed using the t> ep. >ne program provided by the Soi’ hern Bell Telephone Company. The students enjoyed it very much and it was also very educational.
