Owens has joined the staff of Newberry Mills, Inc. as Master Mechanic of the Maintenance Department. Pre vious to this he has been assoc iated with Kendall Co., Beth- une, S. C.; E. I. duPont at the Atomic Energy Commissions Savannah River Plant, Aiken, S. C.; and the U. S. Navy Ship Yard, Charleston, S. C . A veteran of World Warll having served in the Navy. He is a member of the VFW. He is also a member of the following professional organizations: In stitute of Electronic Engineers, Institute of Instrument Society of America; and American Society of Certified Engineer ing Technicians. He is married to the former Anne Johnson of Denmark, S. C. They have two children: Mrs. Glenn W. Gainey (Kathryn) of Bethune, S. C.; and Manson T. “Bubba” Owens, Jr. The Owen’s are Baptist and reside at 717 O'Neal Street. Carl F. Suttles has joined the staff of Newberry Mills, Inc. as General Overseer of the Weav ing Department. He was assoc iated with Osprey Mill, Port- erdale, Georgia, as Superin tendent of the Slashing, Weav ing Department at Drayton Mill, Spartanburg, S. C. Suttle served in the Navy and is a veteran of World War II and Korean War. A member of the VFW and past Master of Drayton Masonic Lodge in Spartanburg. He is married to the former Bernice Allen of Great Falls, S. C. They have four children: Mrs. Troy Brewington (Patsy Jean) of Spartanburg; Carl F. Suttle, Jr. who recently com pleted his tour of duty in the Navy and is employed in Spar tanburg; Debra Ann and Robie Gale. The Suttles’ are Baptist and reside at 709 O'Neal Street. Law officers defend chief WHEREAS, At the regular monthly meeting of the New berry County Law Enforcement Association, Inc., held at the Newberry Inn on the 17th day of October ,1907, discussion was had concerning an incident on Interstate Highway 26 in Newberry County in which many law enforcement officers of our county were involved; AND WHEREAS, a motion was made, duly seconded and passed that the following reso lution be adopted by the New berry County Law Enforce ment Association, Inc. and copies of the same be forward ed to all county newspapers and to the Town Council of Prosperity as follows: Know All Men By These Presents, That the Newberry County Law Enforcement As sociation, Inc. does hereby go on record as commending the ac tions of Chief of Police Will ingham, when he did, in dis regard of his own safety block Interstate Highway No. 26 in Newberry County, S. C. and thus surprised tne person being pursued by the other of ficers. That this action on the part of Chief Dallas Willing ham took the person by sur prise and in all probability saved the life of one of his fel low officers, as the person was armed, with a pistol, which was loaded and cocked. This type of action by one officer in protection of his fellow officers is the spirit which makes our Law Enforcement Association a proud organization. Walter E. Hamilton, Pres. Roy D. Stutts, Sec. Wallace who is being mentioned as a possible third- party candidate for President in 1968, will speak at the Town ship Auditorium in Columbia, Saturday night, November 18. The address, which will be under the sponsorship of the Wallace Forum Association of South Carolina, is part of a nation-wide tour by Wallace as he sounds out sentiments of the voters from coast to coast prior to making a final decision on whether he will seek the presi dency next year. He has pro mised a decision around the first of the year. Wallace’s speech in South Carolina will come close on the heels of a nine-day, four-state series of speeches on the West Coast and follows other succ essful engagements by the for mer governor in Virginia, Miss ouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. More than 25,000 per sons recently turned out for a series of speeches by Wallace in Virginia. Because of his great popul arity in South Carolina, Wall ace is expected to draw a huge crowd in his appearance in Col umbia. Many persons in South Carolina have written Wallace urging him to run for Presi dent again. They recall how he received as much as 44 per cent of the votes in three presiden tial primaries in Winconsin, Indiana, and Maryland in 1964, and they believe he will do even better in these other states in 1968 if he runs.
