County wins
Beautification

The cooperation of over 20,-

county win a first place quar
terly award in Gov. Robert E.
McNair’s beautification prop-
gram.

naugh.
In another project, city en
trances to Prosperity, Whit
mire and Newberry are being
improved. The century-$dd
Prosperity cemetery has been
cleared of debris and a number
of trees have been pruned in
Whitmire and Newberry.
Cavanaugh also reported
that Newberry has purchased
two new dumpsters to eliminate
spillage in garbage collections
and 10,000 plastic can liners to
improve garbage collection.
Five rural dumping sites have
been established.
A new street lighting sys
tem is currently being installed
throughout the city of New
berry.
Counties in the state compete
within three districts for the
quarterly awards. Besides New
berry in the Piedmont district,
Beaufort in the Savannah dis
trict and Colleton in the Pee
Dee district won first place
awards for the second quarter.
This quarter’s second and
third place winners in the Pied
mont district are Lancaster and
Anderson counties.
The first quarter’s first place
winner in the Piedmont dis
trict was Greenville county.
After the third quarter win
ners are selected in December,
all first place winners for the
three quarters will compete for
