South Carolina has recently
come in for some unusual at
tention. Political and govern
mental f jures from Washing
ton, Michigan, California, Ark
ansas, and other points have
come either to see what we
can do for them, or what they
can do for us. In both cases,
South Carolinians have seen fit
to accord each of the disting-
r 1
uished gentlemen exxceedingly
warm welcomes.
Vice President Humphrey,
here recently to dedicate a
mental hospital in Greenville,
received a welcome commensu
rate with the high office he
holds. He said time and again
how much he appreciated the
warmth of the people of the
state—and even more—he was
impressed by the lack of dem
onstrations and placards op
posing his views on certain im
portant issues of the day—
something he sees almost every
where he goes.
Governor Romney of Michi
gan, on a fact-finding tour to
see what causes low income
persons to migrate to the big
cities, said he was impressed
by what he learned and with
the hospitality of the people of
Williamsburg county.
Governor Winthrop Rocke
feller of Arkansas came to see
how South Carolina was util
izing a modem system of tech
nical education to improve the
economic condition of our
state and its people. He liked
what he saw—and how he was
treated.
Governor Ronald Reagan of
California, although on a pure
ly political excursion, was
warmly received by all who saw
and heard him, regardless of
their political affiliation or
leaning.
The actions of South Caro
linians are not surprising, for
warmth, hospitality and gener
osity are traditional with us.
Our past accomplishments,
however, make it even more
important that we continue to
uphold this reputation. More
out-of-state dignitaries of high
rank are sure to come. They
will be welcomed.
