The NEA is holding “Salary and Negotiations School” in Atlanta on Nov ember 29 through December 2, and the South Carolina Educa tion Association, which now hews to the line set out by NEA, is seeking delegates to attend this “school.” In other words, the SCEA seeks teachers who want to become union bargaining ag ents to “negotiate” salaries with school, boards—and they will be taught the methods of striking, no doubt, if the boards refuse to give in to their whims. Teachers insist that they are “professionals”—then they al low their leaders to use labor unions tactics which true pro fessionals would look upon with dismay. The NEA, by the way, is not satisfied to stick to what sup posedly is its job—to serve the cause of education—it also gets into the lobbying business with its latest “Statement of Pol icies.” Among these it endor ses “fair housing” and “Home Rule for the District of Colum bia.” Little wonder that both NEA and SCEA memberships have dropped in the past couple of years. Academy meet to be tonight Thursday night, the 28th at eight o’clock the parents and other friends of The Newberry Academy will meet in the aud itorium. This will be a business session and plans for the year will be discussed. A number of important matters will be up for review. Under the direction of Mrs. May T. Epting students will present a musical number. Since the Kindergarten and Pre-school program is an in tegral part of the Academy all parents of the children enrolled there are cordially invited to attend. Civil Defense tests be held The quarterly test of civil defense equipment throughout the county will be held Wed nesday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m. All sirens will be tested at that time, according to Dave Morison, civil defense director, tor. He was a native of this county, son of the late Albert C. and Addie L. Sligh. Funeral services were held Sunday and burial was in Elm wood cemetery. Mrs. Hair’s brother dies William Marvin Harris died Thursday at his home after a sudden illness. Among his sur vivors is a sister, Mrs. F. M. Hair of this city. Funeral services were held Saturday at Cox Funeral Home. Burial followed in Belton cem etery. IN WHO’S WHO Neal Workman Dickert, son of Dr. and Mrs. Elbert J. Dick ert, is among 18 Wofford Col lege students who have been nominated for listing in “Who’s Who Among Students In American Universities and Col leges.” • CIVIC LEAGUE (Continued from page 1) equally by the city and the Civic League. Last year, under Mrs. J. E. Wiseman Sr., the beautiful potted urns were placed on Main street and the park at the corner of Johns tone and Caldwell streets was completed. When citizens of Newberry think of the Civic League, there is one name that stands out above all others, Mrs. Elliott said, and that is the late Dr. Mamie S. Summer who served as the League’s president for 31 years. It was she who car ried through the project of converting the old courthouse into the beautiful community hall. Many noteworthy occas ions have been held within its walls. In 1955 the League celebrated its golden anniver sary with a banquet. Since 1951 Newberry Christmas Decora tions Teas have become fam ous throughout the state. The League decorates the outside of the Community Hall to lend a harmonious atmos phere for the Christmas par ades. Last year the inside was decorated also. The manger scene is also a part of Christ mas participation. At Easter there were formerly sunrise services but these have been replaced by the Good Friday services. The Valentine Queen’s con test, which is held each year under the direction of Mrs. George Hawkins enables the Civic League to have funds with which to carry out its pro jects. This year, instead of having monthly meetings as formerly, the League is having three outstanding occasions with business being carried on by the executive committee. At Christmas there is to be a pro gram of Christmas music by Miss Juanita Hitt and her stu dents, and in March, a program on flower arrangements by an expert. Mrs .Elliott closed her re marks by' saying that the Civic League’s purpose is to “enlighten, improve and share.” The decorations committee for the tea were Mrs. Steve C. Griffith Sr., Mrs. W. M. Garlington and Mrs. C. M. Smith Jr. The hostess committee was composed of Mrs. W. Roy Anddrson, Mrs. Hugh Foster and Mrs. L. Hart Jordan. AT CAROLINA Miss Dale Bundrick, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. T. The J. Hilton Roof, dean of the Newberry District, will bring the message from the Lutheran Church in South Car olina. Mrs. J. H. Long Jr. has served as program chairman. All members of Lutheran Church Women are invited and urged to attend the annual Fall meeting. Officers will be elect ed for a two year term. Following the lunch and fel lowship hour, those who desire will be given the opportunity to visit the Wiles Chapel on the Newberry College campus for a guided tour. Miller of 98 Glenn street and husband of theformer Miss Mary Massey of 205 Piedmont Ave., Green wood is in Da Nang, Vietnam serving with 'the Naval Sup port Activity. The Da Nang Support Activity is the U. S. Navy’s largest’ overseas shore command and is charged with supplying the more than 100,- 000 military personnel in the five northermost provinces^.
