Direct Indian Effort This Season
Newberry College opens its sixteenth season under
the leadership of Coach Harvey B. Kirkland, who has
posted a 71-69-10 record during the last fifteen years.
Kirkland led the Fighting Redskins to a 4-5-1 rec
ord last season and was in contention for the Con
ference title up to the last several games. On that
basis he was named Coach of the Year for the Con
ference in ’66 and added this laurel to past honors
of South Carolina Coach of the Year which he won in
1953 and 1962.
Coach Kirkland received his A.B. degree from
Newberry in 1937. During his college career, he was
an outstanding football and baseball player. He re
turned to his Alma Mater in 1952 after a highly suc
cessful coaching career at Summerville.
The popular head coach boasts of a family of three
daughters and one son, Benji. Benji led the Indians
in football as quarterback for three years graduat-
ng last season and was also a reliable shortstop for
the baseball team.
TURBEVILLE BACKFIELD COACH
Horace Turbeville serves Newberry College in three
capacities—as an assistant football coach, head base
ball coach, and as director of intramurals.
He is a 1960 graduate of Newberry College, and
was considered one of Newberry’s outstanding backs
before being sidelined with a leg injury. He attend
ed Clemson University prior to transferring to New-
Indian Coaches Turbeville, Fogle, Kirkland
berry, .and played with the Tigers in the Orange
Bowl as quarterback. He still retains his passing
eye and not only tells the right way but can show
them. Punting and field goal kicking are several
other areas where Turbeville demonstrates the right
way.
In addition to scouting and recruiting for the foot
ball team, Coach Turbeville is responsible for setting
up football; basketball, baseball, and track programs
for Newberry College students.
FOGLE IS LINE COACH
Lou Fogle came to Newberry last year in the ca
pacity of assistant line coach and assumes role as
head line coach this year.
Fogle, a native of Franklin, Penn., received his
B.A. degree from Clemson University in 1964. At
Clemson he earned three letters in varsity football
and was outstanding enough to be chosen All-State
two years and All-Conference Atlantic Coast his se
nior year. He received national status by being voted
Honorable Mention All-American End his senior
year. His high school days were equally as outstand
ing as he was voted All-State in Pennsylvania for
two years in both football and basketball.
The young coach takes a personal interest in his
line charges out of season as well as in season. He
served as apprentice to one of football’s great
coaches, Frank Howard, as a student coach after
his eligibility expired.
Fogle married a Clemson coed, Miss JoAnne Cheek
of Charlotte, N. C., who was Miss Majorette Queen
of America and now has her own school of dance in
Newberry. They recently had their first child, a
daughter.
