IN HOSPITAL Mrs. Joe Feagle is a patient in the Newberry County Mem orial hospital where she was admitted last weekend for treatment. KINARD NAMED (Continued f/“*m page 1) ture. ” Cauthen said Kinard’s speci fic role with the higher educa tion commission has yet to be determined, but he will be an executive carrying out com mission programs. One of Kinard’s main duties Cauthen said, will be to work closely with the commission’s research and planning council. Cauthen said the commis sion’s staff will be expanded in time, but he thought it would be best for the new dir ector to choose his own staff and recommend them for form al appointment. Cauthen, announcing the ed ucation group will have offices in the ETV center, said it would be good since in many instances the ETV network will cany the story of education throughout the state. He said South Carolina is “fortunate” to have a man such as Kinard as it first dir ector. The commission was created by the legislature this year. Cauthen appraised the com mission as not a controlling agency but an “instrument for checks and balances.” He said each institution of higher learn ing should maintain its own identity. In his capacity at Dupont, Kinard visited college campuses to recruit high quality person nel for the Savannah River Plant and was responsible for initiating and implementing various cooperative ventures between the laboratory and col leges and universities. The Newberry native is mar ried to the former Mary A. McNease of Fayette. Ala. They have two daughters and a son and reside in Aiken. Kinard is a member of the American Nuclear Society, the American Physical Society, Sig ma XI and the South Carolina Academy of Science. He is also a U. S. Army Air Corps vet eran. FROM VIRGINIA Mrs. Joe Mighton of Virginia Beach, Va. spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs.. M. F. Bow ler. They attended the funeral Friday of Rev. W. A. Baldwin at Rabon Creek Baptist church, Laurens. Rev. Baldwin’s widow is the former Miss Mary Pet erson of Newberry.
