Cars must halt for school bus In South Carolina it is un lawful to pass a school bus , that has stopped to load or un load passengers, the State Highway Department noted to day as schools began opening thruout the state. With the recent reopening of schools across South Caro lina, it is imperative that all drivers realize what their du ties and responsibilities are in this regard. Motorists passing stopped buses illegally are sub ject to fines up to $100. Whenever a school bus is stopped to load or unload pas sengers the driver is required to display flashing warning lights and extend stop sign from left side of bus. Under these condftions, a motorist ap proaching from the front or rear must halt and wait until the bus driver turns off the warning lights and withdraws the stop sign before resuming. When overtaking a stopped school bus from the rear on any* kind of road the motorist must halt and waft until he is able to pass legally. However, when a driver approaches from the front on a four-lane divid ed highway it is not necessary to halt for the bus, provided there is sufficient median width for safety. This does not in clude narrow, gravelled med ians or painted lines on the pavement which afford no protection for students. If a bus is completely off the main travelled portion of a road and students are not allowed to cross the roadway to board the bus, it is safe to pass. Do not depend entirely on flashing lights for your signal to stop as they could be brok en or out of order. Never fol low a school bus too closely and remain alert for stops and turns.
