C., Thursday, Sept. 7, 1967 Oxner-Burns vows spoken On Saturday night, Septem ber 2, 1967 at 8:00 o’clock Miss Sandra Kay Burns and Mr. Rob- ert Carl Oxner were united in marriage at Central Methodist church, Newberry. Dr. Neil E. Truesdell and Dr. George S. Duffie conducted the double ring ceremony. Wedding music was furnish ed by Mr. Gerald Reed, Whit mire, organist, and Miss Brant ley Price sang. Thechurch was beautifully decorated with palms, white mums, glads and candles were lighted by Durrett Lipscomb and George Moore. Miss Becky Burns was her sister’s maid-of-honor. She was dressed in a royal blue lace sheath gown with chiffon cage overdress and lace with net headdress. She carried a bronze mum. Bridesmaids were Misses Nina Sheppard of Silverstreet, Sandra Smith, Eunice Medlock and Janice Davis. They wore dresses identical to that of the maid-of-honor. Miss Roxanne Minick was flower girl and Andrew Todd Oxner, nephew of the groom, ring bearer. With his father as best man, the groom was attended by his brother, Jerry Oxner of Miami Shores, Robert Collier, of Montezuma, Ga., Durrett Lips comb and George Moore. The lovely bride was given in marriage by her father, Carl Sam Burns. Her wedding gown was semi-fitted A-line white organza dress covered by a pearled and scalloped chantilly lace cage with oval neckline. The lace hid a redingote front and swept to a Watteau train. She carried a cascade bouquet of white phalaenopsis orchids, stepahonotis, lily of the valley with miniature english ivy. The bride’s mother wore a sheath mauve pink dress with lace coat. Her corsage was a purple orchid. Mrs. Alma Taylor, maternal grandmother of the bride, was dressed in blue lace with white carnation corsage. Mrs. Christine Burns, pater nal grandmother of the bride, wore pink lace and white car nation corsage. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sam Burns (Faye Taylor) of Newberry. She is a graduate of Newberry High school and Central Pied mont Community College of Dental Hygiene, Charlotte, N. C. and is employed by Dr. J. E. Wiseman. Mr. Oxner is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Leland Oxner (Frances Boggs) of Newberry. He is a graduate of Newberry High school and attended Geor gia Military College. At pres ent, he is a junior at Newberry College and employed by the Shealy Motor Company. For traveling, the brid$ changed to a green sheath dress with silk scarf and lifted the white orchid from her bou quet. Upon their return from a wedding trip to Atlanta, Ga. and Miami, Florida the couple will reside at 2704 Kinard St. Those attending the wedding from out of town included: Mr. and Mrs. 0. G. RECEPTION After the wedding, the par ents of the bride entertained with a reception in the Fellow ship Hall of the church. Mr. and Mrs. Carl B. Setzler introduced the guests to the re ceiving line. Miss Pat Underwood presid ed at the register. Those assisting in serving punch, sandwiches, cakes and mints were Martha Summer, Marsha Swindler, Caroline Boggs, Joan Dominick, Karen Kirkegard, Mary Williams and Patti Minick. Mrs. W. C. Boggs, aunt of the groom, served the wedding cake. Mr. and Mrs. George C. Force bade the guests good-bye. Mrs. Rachael Swindler, of Saluda, greeted the guests at home to see the gifts. Those entertaining for Miss Burns and Bobby Oxner prior to their marriage included a miscellaneous shower given for Miss Burns by Misses Nina Sheppard and Eunice Medlock on August 5; a linen showei for Miss Bums and Nina Shep- pard, another bride-elect, by Misses Karen Kirkegard and Mary Williams, August 9th; miscellaneous shower on Aug ust 18 by Mrs. Lula Cuthbert- son, Mrs. Jean Gardner and Mrs. Donnell Minick; coke par ty for Misses Burns and Shep pard by Susan Frazier, Pat Underwood and Janice Whita ker on August 23; couples party given by Mr. and Mrs. Tom Longshore and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Trefsgar for Sandra Burns and Bobby Oxner and Nina Sheppard and Larry Yonce on August 25; lovely tea given in honor of Miss Burns by Mrs. Carl B. Setzler, Mrs. J. K. Willingham Jr. and Mrs. James (yBosky August 26; Mrs. Floyd Dennis a kitchen shower on August 28; Mr. and Mrs. C D. Oxner on Sep tember 1, 1967. Dave Hayes reappointed director Dave L. Hayes of Newberry was reappointed to the Board of Trustees of John de la Howe School located near McCormick by Gov. Robert E. McNair. Mr. Hayes has served on the Board for 11 years and has served as chairman for the past five years, succeeding the late Mrs. P. Bradley Morrah Sr. of Greenville who served on the Board for 44 years. John de la Howe School is one of the oldest of its kind in the country. It was started in accordance with the will of John De La Howe, emigre Mr. and Mrs. Roland Augustus Wherry of 530 Union street, Spartanburg, South Carolina announce the en gagement of their daughter, Janie Elizabeth to Terry Eugene Moss. The wedding will take place on November 4th at Trinity Methodist church, Spartanburg, S. C. Miss Wherry is a graduate of Spartanburg High school and attended Columbia College. Miss Wherry is the maternal granddaughter of Mrs. Munson P. Davis, Route 2, Newberry, S. C. and the late Mr. Davis and is the paternal granddaughter ef the late Mr. and Mrs. William A. Wherry. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Brown Moss of Great Falls, S. C., the groom-elect is a 1967 graduate of the University of South Carolina where he received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and is presently em ployed with Boeing Aircraft Corporation, Huntsville, Alabama. judge and counsellor for the French Huguenot settlers. He died in 1797 on the estate which is now the site of the school. Comprising 'the plant are 1447 acres, 33 buildings and an enrollment of 250 boys and girls. A building and remodel ing program is underway at the school and two new dormi tories have just been completed. The school is supported by the State. The education , program is geared to fundamentals and prevocational education. Receives grant from Joanna Foundation ents of Newberry College who are residents of either Newber ry or Laurens county. Walter Regnery, President of the Board of Trustees of Joanna Foundation, recently presented the gift to Dr. A. G. D. Wiles, President of Newberry College. Organized in 1945, The Jo anna Foundation constructed a 14-bed hospital in Joanna in 1949 and operated it for 13 years. During the past 10 years a total of 111 college students have received financial aid from the Foundation in scholarships and loans.
