Voters
If you have a valid registration certificate now
you may renew it in person or by mail. The
registration office in the Court House will be
open every day, beginning September I, 1967,
during regular Court House hours for those who
wish to apply in person. If you do NOT have a
valid certificate now (moved from one precinct
to another or recently become of voting age) you
must apply at the office in person. However, if
you have a valid certificate and wish to renew by
mail please be sure to:
1. Fill in ALL blanks in application form
2. Check all statements that are true in your
case.
3. Have application signed by a notary public
4. Be sure to include your present (yellow)
certificate
5. Mail to Newberry County Board of Regis
tration, Court House, Newberry, S. C.

Academy begins
session Sept. 5
The Newberry Academy will
open next Tuesday morning,
September 5, at 8:30. Classes
will be assigned and textbooks
distributed. Plans will be made
for the beginning of the full
time schedule for the following
day. On Tuesday school will be
dismissed about 10 o’clock.
The regular school hours
will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30
p.m.
The kindergarten children
will meet also at 8:30 Tuesday
morning.
The registration in the Ac
ademy grades is well above the
enrolment of last year. With
the kindergarten the total at
tendance will be at least 115.

Wound fatal to
Eugene Reeves
Eugene Reeves, 55, of Lee
street, died at his home Tues
day of a gunshot wound.
Newberry County authorities
said no foul play was indicated.
The victim was a native of
this county, a son of the late
M. W. and Lola Reeves, and
was an employee of Oakland
mills. He was a member of
Summer Memorial Lutheran
church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Eva M. Willis Reeves; three
brothers, Eddie, Nature and
Thomas Reeves of Newberry,
and a sister, Miss Rebie Reeves
of Newberry.
F. M. Schumpert
service held
Frank M. Schumpert, 61, of
Boundary street, died Monday
in a local hospital after a short
illness.
He was a native of Newberry
and a son of the late Ernest
M. and Lizzie Whitman Schum
pert and was a member of
Central Methodist church. He
operated a moving and real
estate business. He was a
former employee of Duke Pow
er Co. and Newberry Electric
company.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Zizzie Henson Schumpert; a
son, Darrell E. Schumpert of
Union; two daughters, Mrs.
Frances Bennett of Newberry
and Mrs. Doris S. Gardner of
Palm Springs, Calif.; two bro
thers, John H. and Ernest C.
Schumpert of Newberry; two
sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Miller
of Columbia and Mrs. Helen
Motts of Newberry.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday at McSwain Fun
eral Home by Rev. George S.
Duffie, Dr. N. E. Truesdell and
Rev. Hoyt Graham. Burial was
in Rosemont cemetery.
Horace Bodie
service Sunday
Horace F. Bodie Sr. 68, died
Saturday at the Columbia hos
pital after a short illness.
Mr. Bodie was born in Green
wood county, the son of the late
J. W. Bodie and Annie Baker
Bodie. He was a retired textile
employee of West End Mill
and owner of the Trading Post.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Andrella Sherbert Bodie;
his step-mother, Mrs. W. P.
Bodie of White Rock; four
sons, Robert E. and John C.,
of Columbia, Richard K. of
Atlanta and Horace F., Harts-
ville; one daughter, Mrs. Ed
ward Rasheed of Georgetown;
one brother, W. P. Bodie, of
Newberry; one sister, Mrs. H.
R. Shealy of Columbia.
Funeral services were held
Sunday at Whitaker Funeral
Home by Dr. H. A. McCullough
and burial was in Rosemont.
POST OFFICE
CLOSES MONDAY
The Newberry Post Office
will observe a legal holiday on
Monday, September 4. There
will be no city or rural mail
delivery and no window serv
ice. Mail will be worked to
lock boxes and outgoing mail
dispatched as usual. Stamps are
available in vending machines

Witness’ meet
It has recently been announc
ed that Anderson has been
chosen as the site for a three-
day Christian Assembly of
Jehovah’s Witnesses. Mr. Tim
othy Brooks, presiding minis
ter for the local congregaton
said the event will attract min
isters with their families from
congregations of Witnesses in
upper South Carolina and Geor
gia as well as western North
Carolina.
Mr. Brooks said that a
number of local Witnesses will
be volunteering their time and
efforts before and during the
three-day gathering making
necessary program and special
functional department arrange
ments.

CAMP PERRY, OHIO—The
National Rifle Association of
America announces that Virgil
C. Bouknight and Paul D. Mat
thews of Newberry were com
petitors in the 1967 National
High-Power Rifle Champion
ships, during the National
Matches at Camp Perry, on
August 26 to September first.
The National Matches, a joint
endeavor of the U. S. Armed
Forces, NRA and the National
Board for the Promotion of
Rifle Practice, bring together,
,in a competitive spirit, more
than 7,000 shooters who fired
in shoulder-to-shoulder compe
tition.

Johnnie Stribble, city safety
officer, stated today that all
regular parking spaces at New
berry College may be used for
the high school football game
Friday night, but that NO park
ing will be allowed on the prac
tice field due to the wet condi
tion of the field.
He also stated that parking
space will be available on the
lot formerly occupied by the
Setzler home, College Street.
RETURNS HOME
W. Fulmer Wells returned to
his home on Harrington street
Sunday after being a patient
in the local hospital for several
weeks. He is reported to be
recuperating nicely.
