Injury Fatal
To Negro Boy
A four year old Newberry
County Negro boy was pro
nounced dead on arrival at a
Columbia hospital about 10:30
p.m. Saturday after he was
struck by a pickup truck on
Boundtary Street here abdout
9 p.m.
Newberry City Police Chief
Colie L. Dowd identified the vic
tim as Vincent Levon Harmon
of Rt. 2, Prosperity.
Dowd said the boy was struck
by a pickup truck driven by
James E. Kuncle, 52, of Rt. 3,
Prosperity. Kuncle told officers
he did not see the child in time
to avoid hitting him, Dowd said.
The police chief said witness
es told officers the truck was
traveling at a slow rate of
speed when the child apparently
darted into the front of the
truck while attempting to cross
the street to join his moher at
a laundromat, Dowd said. He
said the child was knocked down
by the right front of the truck.
C. W. Jones, assistant county
coroner, said an inquest is pend
ing completion of investigation.
The accident was the first traf
fic fatality in the city this year.

FOR OVERSEAS
Miss Verna S. Kohn left
Tuesday for Geneva, Switzer
land. She will visit Miss Mar
garet Chitehley, formerly of
Beaufort, who is employed in
the U. S. Embassy there. After
spending a few weeks in Gene
va, M iss Kohn will tour Ger
many, Italy, France, Spain, Bel
gium, Holland and Denmark.
When asked how lung she
plans to stay on the continent,
Miss Kohn said, “As long as the
money lasts! I hope to stretch
it for at least three months.”
Having spent three weeks in
Spain two summers ago when
she and Miss Doris Dominick
traveled together, Miss Kohn
hopes to spend a full month
tli ' on this rip. 'pain has
always been my love. I could
never get enough of Spain and
her people.” she said.
Miss Kohn will be touring on
her own by car which she will
purchase in Germany and bring
back with her. “I shall just play
it by ear, going where I please
when I please. Needless to say,
I’m quite excited about the
trip.”
She is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Hal Kohn Sr. of this
city.

In South Carolina automobile
license fees range from $3.00
for an “A” plate to $9.00 for a
“G" plate. The registration fee
for motorcycle and motor scoot
ers is $3.00 for a “Z” plate.
The 1908 plates will have
white letters and numbers on a
black background, the opposite
of this year. The white portion
will be reflectorized for better
readability and increased saf
ety at night. It will be the first
time all plates have been re
flectorized. A small percentage
of plates issued many years ago
were reflectorized as a test pro
ject in an effort to obtain in
formation on the effectiveness
of reflectorization in prevent
ing accidents.
Recreation day
to be Friday
City-wide Recreation Day
will be held on Friday, August
11. Events will get under way
at 8 a.m. at Mollohon play
ground. A series of field events
will be held. Participation will
be in different age groups and
for boys and girls. (6-8 years;
9-11; 12-13; 14 and over).
Events will include Piggy
back race, sack race, wheel
barrel race, three-legged race,
horseshoes, tug-o-war, softball
and baseball throw and greasy
pole climb. Free snowballs will
be given to all.
At 2:20 p.m. events will be
held at the swimming pools.
They will include cracker race,
balloon race, relay races, free
style race# and a water rescue
demonstration. Free admission
to the pools for the entire day.
Pool will close at 9:00 p. m.
on this day.
At 6:00 p.m. at Speers St.
Field there will be an All-
Star Game of the Pony League.
The League champions will
play the stars from the other
three teams.
At 8:30 p.m. the Velocity of
Sound Group will play for a
Teen Dance at the Speer St.
Youth Center until 11 p.m.
There will be a charge of 25c
per person for the dance.
Similar event will be held at
McSwain S‘'-eet Park, Me-
Swain Street gwim ming Pool
and Gallman High School Field.
Major Vaughn
dies suddenly
Major W. Vaughn, died early
Wednesday morning at his
home on O’Neal Street.
Born in Asheville, N. C., he
had lived in Newberry for many
years and was retired overseer
of the (doth Room at Newberry
Mills, Inc. He was a member of
O’Neal St. Methodust ehureli.
He is survived by his wife,
Ruby Lee Vaughn of the home-
four sons, Edgar, Key West,
Fla.; Gary V., Cayce; William
J., Newberry and James Ih.
Charlotte, N. ('.; three daugh
ters, Mrs Annie Mackison, And
erson. Miss Bonnie Lou Vaughn,
Newbefry and Mrs. Judy Ann
Wallace of Newberry.
Funeral arrangements are in
complete and will be announced
by Whitaker Funeral Home.
Plates to be
sold by UDC
on Friday
Attractive plates depicting
scene-; in Newherry will he on
salt- on the public square on
Friday, August 11, between
hours of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and
4 to 6 p.m.
These plates were sold sev
eral years ago by the Drayton
Rutherford Chapter, UDC and
a second order was recently
made because of popular de
mand.
The plates are centered with
a sketch of the Old Courthouse
with a * description of the em-
dem on the reverse side of the
date. Other scenes from New-
)erry are also depicted.
