The “White Elephant” met with a minor mishap the
other day—one of the city’s packer trucks turned on its
side at the city dump as it was being emptied on an in
cline. Fortunately, the driver, J. P. Hyler and the truck

Private Donald F. Amick, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Amick,
Prosperity, completed a radio
course at Fort Knox July 14.
MONTGOMERY, ALA.—Wil
liam F. Partridge Jr., son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Partridge,
1208 Pope street, has been
commissioned a second lieuten
ant in the U. S. Air Force upon
completion of the U. S. Air
Force Reserve Officers Train
ing Corps program and his end-
of-training encampment at
Gunter AFB, Ala. Lieutenant
Partridge, who received his
gold bars at a special encamp
ment ceremony, recently was
graduated from The Citadel,
Charleston with the B.A. de
gree in history. The lieutenant
has been granted an educational
delay to enable him to obtain
his law degree. He is a 1963
graduate of Newberry High

Last week in this column, we
reviewed the comments of Dr.
Joseph Link, Jr., a Xavier Un
iversity Professor, who main
tained that the basic cause of
our great current problems is
international Communism. Link,
who was an officer in World
War II, served in 1951 and 1952
as public Affairs Attache for
our American Ambassador in
Korea.
The problems (inflation, the
spending) and the cause hav
ing been defined, Link proposed
a cure. Here are some of his
suggestions, as he made them
over the Manion Forum radio
network.
“Let’s take Viet Nam. Here
we have gone in military--dip-
lomacy has failed, as in Korea.
The political and state people
are calling the shots. We should
give the military strategists full
authority for winning the war
quickly and decisively and give
them every weapon we have. If

when I was in Korea, I don’t
think we would have a Viet
Nam today.
The communists respects only
brute force; he’ll lie, cheat, zig
zag, compromise, but never live
up to any decent agreement or
treaty. You can’t do business
with an international bandit.
How long must it take us to re
ally learn this?
“I’ve just read an authentic
report stating that since the
beginning of the Viet Nam war
there have been about 68,000
civilians, women and children,
in South Viet Nam who have
been assassinated, wounded or
kidnapped by the Viet Cong.
I’ve also been leading and see
ing the results of some 400
newsman and photographers
who are having a field day in
South Viet Nam quoting the
propaganda handouts of the
North Viet Nam Communist re
gime. And then they lament the
fact that North civilians have
been killed in military target
bombing.
"What I don’t understand is
this sudden concern of the world
over the killing of women and
children in North Viet Nam
while since 1962 the Viet Cong
have been planting bombs right
in the heart of Saigon almost
daily, resulting in thousands of
civilian deaths.
“The chairmen of the House
and Senate Armed Forces Com
mittees have also come out for
total war, as has former Pres
ident Dwight Eisenhower, who
allowed for even the use of the
atomic bomb if necessary. Viet
Nam is the same as Korea: it’s
a country divided with a South
ern democratic head being agg
ressed upon and invaded. We
should have gone into Viet Nam
with full armies and navies, de
clared war, used every weapon
and had a decisive victory.
“If we’re really serious about
fighting and winning this battle
against Communism, we’ve got
to tighten our belts, give up
many of our luxuries and, with
a firm and dedicated foreign
policy, fight to win quickly and
decisively with every mechan
ical and personal weapon we
have at our command. Peace
never comes cheaply. We must
be ready, willing and able to
pay the price.”
