Coast Guard Recruit Training
Center here.
Guided by experienced Coast
Guard senior petty officers du
ring his training, he studied the
fundamentals of such military
and naval subjects as seaman
ship, infantry drill, shipboard
procedures, and at-sea survival
techniques. The basics of mil
itary customs and courtesies,
and familiarization with the
Coast Guard’s mission and re
sponsibilities polished the skills
he needed to make the trans
ition from civilian to Coast
Guardsman.
The Coast Guard is part of
the Transportation Department
and is the United States’ major
maritime safety organization.

To The Editor:
Legislation permitting women
to serve on juries in South Car
olina, ratified by the General
Assembly on the last day of
June, gives special timeliness
to the July “Christian Citizen
ship” emphasis of the Christ
ian Action Council.
Last November the voters ap
proved changing the State’s
Constitution so that women
could serve on juries. (Prev
iously women in this state had
served only on Federal Court
Juries.)
The new legislation directs
that women be included in the
juror list. However, a woman in
custody of a child under seven
may be exempt from a jury by
the presiding judge.
“Jury Service—A Christian
Opportunity” is the theme of a
“responsible citizenship” em
phasis being encouraged in the
churches by the inter-church
Christian Action Council dur
ing July.
A special “symposium” of
materials relating to the jury
system, being distributed thru-
out the state at the present
time, carries articles on the
history, kinds of juries and
importance of service on them
by many leading citizens of the
state.
Writers include Attorney
General Daniel R. McLeod,
SLED Director J. P. Strom, 4th
Circuit Judge James Spruill,
Jr., historian and vice-president
of Erskine College - Dr. Joseph
T. Stukes, and the immediate
past president of the S. C. Bar
Association — the Hon. John
M. Scott.
A minister, the Rev. E. Doug
las Vaughn, Jr., of Abbeville,
declares that “I don’t Want to
be Exempt” in his article - and
reasons that ministers ought
to be able to help decide justice
in the courts as well as pray
for mercy in the church.
Mrs. Alfred S. Jennings, a
state League of Women Voters
points out that this League has
legislation since 1957.
