Fxigar Hoover Can there be any act more Mckenin^ and revolting than a crowd of so-called citizens des ecrating and burning their country’s flag ? Those who re sort to such moronic behavior are surely lost in the depths of depravity. Obviously, their first loyalty is not to the railed States. True, our nation is founded on concepts and principles which encourage dissent and opposition. These are traditions we must always defend and support. But touching a torch to the flag far exceeds reason able protest. It is a shameful act which serves no purpose but to encourage those who want our country to erupt in violence and destruction. On this I'.Ust anniversary of the Declaration of Independence we might ask what causes un patriotic outbursts and irrat ional protests. Why do people turn agutinst their native land and opriily support totalitarian forces whose goal is to enslave the world -forces which do not even allow token opposition from their subjects? Why do ome individual-' refuse to serve and defend their eountry'.’ Why do they burn their draft cards and their flag'.’ There may he many reasons for such act.on, but 1 am fully convinced that dying - pat riot ;sm is one major cause I.ove of country is being heemphasized and excluded from -cvcral phases of iair life. Many edu cators and other leaders • em to feel it is no longer necessary for boys and girls to be <on- rerned with how our country came into being, what it stands for, and the courageous and noble deeds of our forefathers to preserve it. Open aversion to patriotism of any form is increasing. Walton McLeod of Newberry has been appointed Assistant L. S. Attorney it was announced Tuesday by District Attorney TYrrell L. Glenn. Me Lend, S.O, i- a native nf Walterboro, the son of Mr. and Mi's. W. ,1. McLeod of that city. Hi- graduated from Phillips Academy. Andover, Mass, in 1 Yale Lniver-uty in Idbb; and the Lniversity of South Carolina Law School in ISo-l. He was admitted to the bar in VXA. During Ins senior year m law school, McLeod served as a stu dent assistant in the district at torney’s office, after which he served for one year as law clerk to Clement F. Haynsworth, Jr., chief judge of the Fourth Cir cuit Court of Appeals at Rich mond. For the past two years he has been an associate in the law firm of Rope and Sebum- pert in Newberry. Ho ,s a Navy veteran, having .-erved on the amu'aft carrier Tieonderoga ill the Westorn Pa cific. He noted that since the policy expires August 1, that time was very importnat in getting bids on a new contract. Manager Riebe said he could make up specifications for bids: in one week. Councilman Mc- Cutcheon moved that tin- city manager draw up specifications and bring them back to council for approval before asking for bids. Council agreed to this proposal.
