PAGE 6—The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, June 8, 1867 Awards Day was held last Tuesday at Mid-Carolina with a number of Seniors re ceiving special awards. A complete listing of the various awards recipients may be seen elsewhere on this page. The outstanding Senior award winners are pictured above left to right seated Judy Rawls, Virginia Blount, Cathy Hentz, Janice Ringer, Hubert Kinard, Frances Ann Spotts; standing, Danny Wiggers, Stanley Boozer, Emlon Metts, Ann Bowers, Prosperity Citizen.) Awards Day Exercises were held at Mid-Carolina High school, May 30 at 10:30 a.m., in the school gymtorium. Aw ards presented by H. M. Bed- enbaugh, principal, were as fob lows: Valedictorian, Virginia Blount and Salutatorians Cathy Hentz. Virginia had a record in high school of 94.43. She is the dau ghter of Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Blount of Pomaria. Cathy had a scholastic record in High school of 93.11. She is the dau ghter of Mr. and Mrs. Wood- row Hentz of Pomaria. The girls’ citizenship av/ard was given to Janice Ringer, by the Literary Sorosis of Pros perity, for being chosen by the faculty and her classmates as the best candidate for future citizenship. Janice is the dau ghter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary L. Ringer of Pomaria. The boys’ citizenship award was given to Hubert Kinard, presented by the Prosperity Civitan Club, chosen by the fac ulty and classmates as possess ing outstanding dependability, leadership, service and patriot ism. Hubert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira H. Kinard of Prosperity. Danforth awards, “I dare You,” were presented to an outstanding senior boy and girl. This year these awards were given to Danny Wiggers and Frances Ann Spotts. Danny is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bern ard Wiggers of Pomaria and Frances is the daughter of Mrs. Frances H. Spotts of Prosper ity. The science award was given to Virginia Blount for having the highest scholastic record in science. In order to be consid ered for this award a student must have completed all the science courses offered by the school. Virginia was also pre sented the Math award for hav ing the highest scholastic rec ord in Math. Janice Ringer was presented the commerce award for having the highest scholastic record in the full commercial course as determined by the commerce teachers. Cynthia Ruff received the French award for having the highest academic record in French. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray L. Ruff. The English award was pre sented to Luke Black for hav ing the highest scholastic rec ord in English. Luke is the son of Mrs: Ralph B. Black, of Prosperity . Stanley Boozer received the Social Studies award for having Cynthit Ruff, and Luke B1 the highest academic record in Social Studies. Stanley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Boozer of Prosperity. Ann Bowers was recognized is having been chosen by the faculty to receive the D A R Good Citizen Award. It was based on scholarship, leader ship, and cooperation with stu dents and the faculty. Randy Griffin was recognized as having been chosen by the teachers to represent Mid-Caro lina at Wofford College as King Teen. They were Janice Ring er, Editor; Emlon Metts, Bus iness Manager; Ann Bowers Club Editor; Hubert Kinard, Sports Editor; Bryan Amick, and Frances Ann Spotts, Photo Managers; Linda Epting, Sub scription Manager; Wanda Au- ton also served as Art Editor. School paper awards, given to students chosen to help pub lish THE REBEL ROUSER (theMid-Carolina High School paper) were Editor, Shirley Cook; Business Manager, Dan ny Wiggers; General News, Luke Black; Feature Editor, Deena Dawkins; Club Editor, Amy Sandel; Art Editor, Jean- nie Lee Nobles; Sports Editor Randy Griffin; Subscription Manager, Terrell Alewine; Typists, Phyllis Lake, Dottie Shealy, Janet Stoudemire. Hubert Kinard, Student Council President and Emlon Metts, Senior Class President, were presented with an award for showing outstanding ability and leadership. Hubert Kinard was presented in award by the Newberry Ob server for having the highest academic average of any stu dent participating in two major sports in high school. Judy Rawls was giv*en a medal for having served as editor of the Literary Magaz ine. The following seniors were recognized as having received scholarships from various or ganizations: Virginia Blount, Pomaria Ruritan Scholarship; Judy Rawls, Kiwanis scholar ship to Newberry College; Ran dy Griffin, Lutheran Synod Scholarship; Deborah Metis, 40 & 8 Scholarship and Danny Holland, Basketball Scholar ship at King’s Business college. Billy L. Bolton, Band Direc tor, presented awards to the following band students: All State Band, Jan Rader, Angela Dominick;Solo at State Festi- zk. Clinic Band, Nancy Shealy, Angela Dominick, Mac Dominick, Ivonne Bedenbaugh, Brenda Meade, Jimmy Meade, Emory Simmons, Dianne Ring er, Rick Foster, Nelson Rhodes and Steve Fulmer. Coach Armstrong presented trophies for the 1967 Tr^ck season to the following out standing participants: Most Valuable, Ronnie Berley. Ron nie set school records in the High Jump—5’7”; High Hurd les—17.4 seconds and Low Hurdles (on a straightaway) 22.3 seconds. He was also high scorer in the Conference 5-4 Track Meet with nine points (first in High Jump and second in Low Hurdles and fourth in High Hurdles). The leader in the Field events was Charles Mayer. Charles set school records in Shot Put 51’3 ” and Discus 121’8”. He was the state champion in Shot Put, Class A. Fred Coleman was the leader in Track Ev ents. Fred set a school record in the Mile 4:48.3 minutes and was Conference 5-4 Champ (undefeated in Conference Com petition).
