World Salutes Great Woman
Helen Keller Celebrates 87th Birthday
Helen Keller, one of the most admired and honored women of
all time, will celebrate her 87th birthday on June 27. Miss Keller,
world-famous for her triumph over blindness and deafness, will
mark the day quietly with close friends and family at her home
in Connecticut.
The graduation of a deaf-blind person from a university was
considered a miracle in 1904
when Helen Keller received her
degree from Radcliffe. Since
that time she has devoted the
major part of her life to help
ing other blind and deaf-blind
persons in this country and
throughout the world.
Although she is unable to par
ticipate so actively today,
she maintains her interest in
the work of the American
Foundation for the Blind and
the Helen Keller World Cru
sade for the Blind. These two
organizations, headquartered
in New York City, continue the
programs which Miss Keller
pioneered in providing blind
and deaf-blind people with the
opportunities for education
and a full, independent life.
Through her travels xor these
organizations over six conti
nents she met most of the lead
ers of our time, all of whom
have felt the wonder and
warmth that she inspires.
Countless others have learned
of her attainments through
her books, which have been
translated into more than 50
languages, and school children
in all comers of the globe study
her life story.
Mayors, governors, presi
dents and prime ministers are
expected to send congratula
tions to Miss Keller on June 27.
Others will honor her by sup
porting the programs for blind
people which she led for many
years.
