This was the first such horse
event staged by the Rimers but
they are hoping to make it an
annual affair.
There was only one sour
note—although there was no
admission fee charged, the
host had gone to the trouble of
having available sandwiches
and drinks for those attending.
After the lunch recess, the
lovely grounds were littered
with drink cups, sandwich
wrappers and other debris.
Makes one wonder how people
can take advantage of such
hospitality without giving a
thought to common decency.
We thoroughly enjoyed the
day there and believe there
are many of you who would
have if you had known about
it. Should the Rimers decide
to do this again next year I’ll
try to let you know in advance
—but if you go, PLEASE place
your trash in the containers
provided.

daughter, Kim Michelle, on
April 25 at Self Memorial hos
pital. Mrs. Wood is the , form

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Todd of this

Poppies will be
sold Saturday

Legion Auxiliary Unit 24, re
minds the public that Satur
day is Poppy Day.
The funds obtained from the
distribution of the poppies en
able the Rehabilitation and
Child Welfare programs of the
Auxiliary to function at full
effectiveness, Mrs. Anderson
said. “Poppy Day is your op
portunity to extend a helping
han<J to a child you have never
seen—to let a disabled veteran
in a hospital know that you
care—to show the veteran in
your community that you re
member the sacrifices he made
for America,” she continued.
She urged that everyone buy
and wear a Poppy Saturday.
Scrapbook be
given Academy
Mrs. Steve C. Griffith, Sr.,
will present a Scrapbook to
Newberry Academy at the
school’s final chapel program
Friday, May 26 at 8:30 a”m.
Mrs. Griffith has kept a
scrapbook of all activities con
cerning the Academy since its
inception last year.
Thechapel program will be in
the school auditorium and the
sixth grade will be in charge
of devotions.
Dr James C. Kinard, presi
dent, invites parents and
friends of current and pros
pective students to attend. He
also issued a special invitation
to any person who is interested
in the Academy to attend the
short program and to inspect
the Academy.
Miss Rawl dies
in Columbia
Miss Sarah Elizabeth Rawl
of Newberry died Friday in a
Columbia hospital.
Funeral services were held
Saturday at the graveside in
St. Stephen’s Lutheran church
cemetery in Lexington The
Rev. Melton Frick officiated.
She was a member of the
Lutheran Church of the Re
deemer in Newberry.

CB Jamboree
be this weekend
The Friend CB Club of New
berry and Palmetto CB Club
of Columbia are joining hands
in presenting the Mid-State
CB Jamboree which is to be
held at Newberry Fairgrounds,
May 27 and 28. In attendance
will be CB Clubs in surround
ing counties and states. The
Jamboree begins Friday night
at 8:00 with round and square
dancing at Newberry National
Guard Armory, until midnight.
The Jamboree opens Satur
day at the Fairgrounds at 10
a.m. with entertainment. After
lunch at noon, there will be a
drawing for prizes and more
entertainment until 5:30 p.m.
The prizes were donated by
merchants at Newberry, Pros
perity, Whitmire, Little Moun
tain, Chapin, Columbia, Gaff
ney and North Augusta. Among
the prizes in a Courier TR
CB Mobile radio which one
does not have to be present to
win. Another dance will be held
at the Armory Saturday night
beginning at 8:30.
Sunday, the Jamboree begins
at 10:00 a.m, worship services
will be conducted by Rev. W.
D. Shealy of Boys Farm with
Miss Judy Messinger at the
organ, accompanied by Mrs.
Shealy and the Boys. From
1:00 p.m. until 5:30 there will
be entertainment and drawing
for prizes.
Some of the entertainment
will be by Miss Ollie and her
Baldwin organ from Newberry;
Rolling Joe Johnson will be
singing and dancing from his
rolling chair which is his way
of moving around. Other enter
tainment will be provided by
the Vibrations, the Cimarrons,
and the Swanks of Newberry;
the Jades of Clinton; the Mor
row Family of Columbia and
Mr. Magic of Whitmire.
Drawing for the grand prize

end of the Jamboree It is not

Last rites for
Miss Bynum, 93
Miss Annie Elizabeth Bynum,
93, died Friday afternoon at J.
F. Hawkins Nursing Home af
ter a lingering illness.
Miss Bynum was born in
Newberry county th,e daugh
ter of the late John Thomas and
Margaret Frances Worthy
Bynum.
She was a member of the
first graduating class of Boun
dary Street school in 1891 and
taught school for 54 years, hav
ing taught in the Hartford sec
tion of this county, Florence
and Newberry.
She was a member of Central
Methodist church.
Surviving are a niece, Mrs.
Frances B. Clary of George
town, and a nephew, T. Bynum
Neel of Savannah, Ga.
Funeral services were con
ducted Saturday at Whitaker
Funeral Home by Rev. C. D.
Wallace. Interment was in
Rosemont cemetery.
Active pallbearers were J. J.
Chappell,'John T. Norris, Lewis
Floyd, W. E. Turner, Jr., Clar
ence Wallace and Henry T.
