A Certificate of Appreciation was presented by the City of Newberry to Mrs.
Richard L. Baker for her services as chairman of the County Beautification com
mittee. The presentation was made by Mayor Pro-Tern Clarence A. Shealy Jr. dur
ing exercises at the local post office Friday.

Congressman Bryan Dorn was speaker at a Friday afternoon program at Newberry
Post Office at which time the office received a “Certificate of Merit” for the out
door beautification of the postal facilities. The presentation was made to Harry
Moose, Postmaster, by William H. Burson, asistant to the director, Atlanta Postal
Region, and in turn, Mr. Moose presented the award to the maintenance men, Ber-

trout stocked
Arrangements have been
made with the U. S. Fish and
Wildlife Service for the stock
ing of larger rainbow trout
next year, according to Chief
of Fisheries Jefferson C.
Fuller, Jr., of the Wildlife
Resources Department,
The trout will be from a
strain developed at the Wythe-
ville, Virginia, hatchery of the
USFWS and eggs from the
hatchery will be transported
to the Walhalla hatchery for
raising. These trout mature
earlier and grow faster and
consequently will be larger
when released.
Some anglers of the Columbia
area had their first taste of
the Wytheville strain Monday
when 7,000 rainbows were
turned loose in the Saluda
river below Lake Murray,
almost 1,800 of them being
the Wytheville strain. All of
this strain released were 11
inches or better, some up to 18
inches being reported. This will
be the last stocking of the
Saluda River at Columbia until
October, when 1,000 trout will
be released.
Ten thousand rainbows of the
Wytheville strain were brought
down from Virginia by truck
and the remainder will be stock
ed in other waters under the
regular schedule. They will
make up around 25 per cent
of the trout in all subsequent
stocking, until they run out.
It takes from 18 to 24 months
in the hatchery to raise the
standard rainbows to a length
of eight to ten inches, the
general release size.
Golden Agers
have meeting
The monthly meeting of the
Golden Age Fellowship was
held in the Social Hall of Cen
tral Methodist church on Wed
nesday afternoon, April 19.
Twenty-one members including
one new member, were present.
Mrs. McCullough led the de
votions. The meeting was op
ened with all singing the hymn
“I Need Thee Every Hour.”
She then chose “God Needs
You” for her meditation. In her
remarks, Mrs. McCullough sta
ted that God needs everybody
everyday. Each person has a
place that no one else can fill.
It might not be the highest
place or the greatest task. It
might be just a kind word or a
smile that will change a per
son’s whole outlook on life. Our
day is not wasted if we start
a smile growing where a frown
was flourishing. For along the
way we can always find some
one whose burden is far heav
ier than our own. She then told
the story of the Cross.
Mrs. McCullough also read
an interesting article “Was The
Resurrection in Vain?” This
was followed with prayer.
Mrs. W. E. Baker led the
recreation.
A very interesting guessing
contest was held. Four ladies
tied for the prize. When straws
were drawn Mrs. M. E. Smith
was the winner. A -Bible quiz
was also held.
Due to the illness of Mrs.
Swindler, chairman of nomina
ting committee, the election of
officers was postponed until
the June meeting.
Mrs. Phil Brooks and Mrs.
H. B. Kirkegard served.
