Three killed
in collision
at Kinards
KINARDS — Three persons
were killed and six injured in
the head-on collision of 2 cars
on a sharp curve of a second
ary road here about 6 p.m.
Sunday.
State Highway Patrol Cpl.
W. E. Hamilton identified the
victims as Clarence Wilson, 54
of Winston, Salem, N. C., Mar
garet Miller Suber, 24, of
Thomasville, N. C., and Mrs.
Annie Lois Smith, 37 of Rt. 3,
Clinton. All were Negroes.
Cpl. Hamilton said Wilson
was a passenger in a 1967
Chevrolet driven by his son,
Robert Wilson, 24, of Route 3,
Newberry. The younger Wilson
was reported in good condition
at Newberry County Memorial
hospital Sunday night.
Mrs. Smith and the Suber
woman were passengers in a
1957 Chevrolet driven by Mrs.
Smith’s husband, Amos, 41,
of Route 2, Clinton. Smith was
listed in good condition.
Other passengers in the
Smith car were the couple’s
four children. They are report
ed in good condition.
Hamilton said the Wilson car
was traveling east on secondary
road 36-368 when it was in
collision with the westbound
Smith car.
Occupants of both cars were
pinned in the wreckage about
30 minutes while wrecker crews
pried open the doors, Hamil
ton said.
The accident was about a
half mile off U. S. 76 and 9
miles west of Newberry.
Newberry County Coroner
George R. Summer said an in
quest will be conducted as soon
as the injured persons are able
to testiy.

with the Bronze Star Medal at
Langley AFB, Va., for meri
torious service while engeged
in military operations against
Viet Cong forces.
Captain Smith was cited for
his performance as an aircraft
maintenance officer. His pro
fessional ability, initiative and
performance of duty contrib
uted to the success of the Air
Force’s mission in Southeast
Asia
He is now at Langley as
member of the Tactical Air
Command which provides bat
tlefield firepower, precisiom
jet photo reconnaissance and
air mobility for the nation’s
ground forces.
The Newberry High School
graduate received his B. S.
degree in mechanical engineer
ing from Clem son University
in 1962. He was commissioned
upon completion of Officer
Training School at Lackland
AFB, Texas.
His wife, Ella, is the daugh
ter of J. O. Harmon Sr.
Mrs. Hendrix

Mrs. Alma Hendrix, 84, wi
dow of Willie D. Hendrix, died
last Thursday morning at the
home of her daughter, Mrs.
Raymond Merchant after a lin
gering illness.
Mrs. Hendrix was born in
Newberry County, the daughter
of late Frederick and Matilda
Bickley Hendrix. She was a
member of Trinity Methodist
Church.
She is survived by one daugh
ter, Mrs. Raymond (Mae) Mer
chant of Joanna; eight grand
children and six great-grand
children.
Funeral services were con
ducted Friday at 4 p.m. at
Trinity Methodist Church by
Rev. Sam Sebring and the Dr.
L. Bryon Harbin. Interment
was in the church cemetery.
