CITY PLANNING
When I heard that city plan
ning was to be discussed at a
meeting Tuesday morning ((see
story elsewhere in this issue),
my first thought was that City
Manager Riehe was going to
use the Merchant’s Association
to try to put over one of his
pet projects, urban renewal.
Seems I was wrung—at Last at
this stage of the game although
you may be sure I’ll be closely
watching developments on this
city planning business. I he
gentleman from Atlanta who
outlined the proposal emphati
cally rejected the idea that
federal funds would in any
way be involved. The whole
idea is to get merchants to
help themselves by making the
shopping center more attrac
tive.
Among the things mentioned
was congestion of the streets,
('specially by the tremendous
trailer-t factor outfits unloading
merchandise. I his is 'ome-
thing that has been mentioned
tu me on several occasions. It
- bad enough when the big
trucks are on Main street, but
whet! they park on Lindsay or
Bovee (-ometimes jutting' out
Into (’ollege t they are really a
bottleneck.
Keen without over-all city
planning. City Council should
do something to control the
>j/,e of trucks in the city or
pivivid-' off-street loading
-/ones, oi, something. It’s al-
mo-t as easy to run down to
Columbia to shop than it L
to negotiate our city streets
at tunes. It must be remem
bered. too. that the merchants
were the ones who quickly put
a stop to any plans for one
way streets. They had better
tie looking for ways and means
t,, do SOMETHING to make
shopping in the city more at
tractive. A - the gentleman
