Valentine Day
safe on roads
South Carolina travelers re
ceived a Valentine’s Day gift
of good health and happiness
as there were no fatal auto
mobile accidents in the state
that day, S. C. Highway De
partment records indicate.
Since 1967, the state’s high
accident rate has shown a
slight decline, thus encouraging
safety officials to hope for a
year-long improvement.
Through February 14, there
were 83 traffic fatalities in S.
C., 10 fewer than for the cor
responding period of 1966. Ten
pedestrains have been killed
already this year along with
three motorcyclists and one
bicyclist The rest were killed
in auto, bus and truck accid
ents.
Belying the common opinion
that youngsters are usually the
victims in pedestrian accidents
is the fact six of the first 10
victims this year were older
men and women. Their ages
ranged from 48 through 82
years. Four of the victims
ranged in age from 6 through
18.
“Every time you step into
a street or highway, watch
closely for automobiles be
cause the driver may not see
you or have time to stop”, the
Highway Department warns.

Interviewed yesterday, local
Air Force recruiter Sgt. Frank
F. Fernley said, “Few people
know that a person just out
of nursing school can be com
missioned a second lieutenant
and have an immediate starting
salary of $436.98 a month.”
The sergeant also said that
a nurse who has three years
experience may start an Air
Force career as a first lieu
tenant with a salary of almost
$500 a month.
Talking about advancement,
the sergeant said, “after 18
months service a nurse is pro
moted to first lieutenant.”
Sgt. Fernley said that with
the promotion there is a salary
increase and then six months
later there is a second raise.
