Mrs. Merchant
rites Tuesday
Mrs. Alberta Cook Merchant,
8f>, widow of Henry Win^ard
Merchant, died Monday at a
local hospital after a long ill
ness.
Native of this county, a
daughter of thes late John
Belton and Rebecca AdelU
Livingston Cook, she was a
member of Mayer Memorial
Lutheran church and a life
member of the Lutheran
Church Women.
Surviving are four sons,
Cecil, John and Furman Mer
chant of Newberry and Henry
Merchant of Columbia; five
daughters, Mrs. Berley Rister,
Mrs. Carl Bobb, Mrs. Charles
Price and Mrs. Harold Epps,
of Newberry, and Mrs. Lynell
Bowers of Prosperity; three
brothers, 0. C. Cook Sr., and
Howard Cook Sr. of Newberry
and Jim Cook of Prosperity;
two sisters, Mrs. S. C. Hiller of
Newberry and Mrs. John Daw
kins of Prosperity; 17 grand
children, 24 great-grand child
ren and a great-great grand
child.
Funeral services were con
ducted Tuesday at her church
by Rev. J. S. Wessinger and
Rev. Francis I .Fesperman.
Burial was in St. Lukes Lu
theran church cemeterv.

Mrs. Long dies
in Columbia
Mrs. Faye Vance Long, 52,
died Wednesday afternoon at
the Baptist hospital in Colum
bia after a lingering illness.
Mrs. Long was born in Bun
combe county, N. C., the
daughter of the late Zebulon
and Julia Emblcr Vance. She
was a member of Hunt Me
morial Baptist church.
She is survived by her hus
band, James T. Long Sr.; one
son, James T. Long Jr., of
Newberry; three brothers,
Price Vance, Zeb Vance, and
Noel Vance, all of Lockhart.
Funeral services were con
ducted Friday at her church
and interment was in Newberry
Memorial Gardens.

Power company
announces
promotions
I. H. Boinest, formerly man
ager of right-of-way for S. C.
Electric and Gas Co., has been
named manager, land and right
of way, it has been announced
by V. C. Summer, vice presi
dent of electric operations and
engineering.
Summer announced also the
appointment of land agent,
Heyward D. Wessinger to as
sociate manager, right-of-way;
and land agent Robert T. Cas
tles to associate manager, land
department.
All changes are effective im
mediately.
In addition to his present
right-of-way duties. Boinest
will be responsible for all land
department operations. A na
tive of Pomaria, he received
bis AB degree from Newberry
college in 1925. That same year
he joined the SCEGCO prede
cessor company, Broad River
Power company, and in 1929
was transferred to the W. S.
Barstow company at Reading,
Pa. He handled right-of-way
work for many operating com
panies under the Barstow sys
tem, until 1952, when he joined
SCEGCO as right-of-way man
ager.
Boinest is a Mason, a Shrin-
er, and a member of the Am
erican Right-of-Way Associa
tion, the Exchange Club, For
est Lake Country Club, Fort
Jackson Country Club, Pal
metto Club, and Incarnation
Lutheran church. He is mar
ried to the former Ann Vir
ginia Crosson of Brunswick, N.
J. Their son, James W. Boinest
is a USAF Captain.
Wessinger is a Chapin na
tive where he completed high
school. He ha? been engaged in
International Correspondence
School study and is presently
enrolled at the College of Gen
eral Studies, University of
South Carolina.
Wessinger joined SCEGCO
in 1947 as a gas fitter and un
til 1951 worked also as a gas
meter repairman. He served
with the U. S. Army in Korea
for two years, returning to
SCEGCO in 1953 as land agent
in the right-of-way depart
ment.
He is a charter member of
the Carolina Chapter of the
American Right-of-Way Asso
ciation, past lieutenant gover
nor of the Columbia district of
Ruritan National, twice pres
ident of Chapin Ruritan, mas
ter Mason of Boyleston Lodge,
and past consul commander of
Woodmen of The World.
Also, vice chairman of the
church council and president of
the men’s auxiliary of Our
Saviour Lutheran church in
West Columbia; and member of
the West Columbia-Cayce
Chamber of Commerce and the
Pineview Ruritan Club.
Wessinger is married to the
former Doris Moore of Pros
perity, and they have three
children.
Castles is a native of Winns-
boro where he received his
early schooling. He served in
the U. S. Navy from 1943-1946,
attended Clemson University
and in 1951 joined SCEGCO as
a junior engineer in mainten
ance, design and drafting. In
1956 he was promoted to en
gineer, was named construc
tion assistant in 1962 and was
appointed land agent in 1964.
