WONDER WHAT?
Wonder what the members
of the South Carolina Educa
tion Association thought when
they heard the news Tuesday
that plans have been completed
for the merger of the SCEA
and the Palmetto (Negro) Ed
ucation Association?
Work toward this has been
going on for a couple of years,
but it was kept mighty quiet.
As I recall, few members of
SCEA knew that a merger was
being proposed until the cat
was let out of the hag by an
official of the National Educa
tion Association at an NEA
convention last year. And that
is about the ONLY thing they
have heard. Carlos Gibbons,
executive secretary of the
SCEA, brags about how many
pieces of literature the SCEA
sends to its members but none
of this voluminous material, to
my knowledge, has contained
a word or even the slightest
hint of what has been going
on between the SCEA and the
PEA for the past two years.
Gibbons, who has held this
position for the past several
years, has steadily advanced the
liberal NEA philosophy in the
SCEA, to such an extent ’hat
this year, for the iirst tinn,
many teachers refused to join
their state professional organ
ization. The repercussions from
the most recent announcement
probably will be great, but
also will probably he to no
avail. The “merger" will have
to be approved by the Council
of Delegates of each of the
Associations. If this body runs
true to form, the proposals will
be railroaded through with
little chance for the opposition
to be heard.
Many teachers have in the

I have worked with Judg-

work, had occasion to talk with
many lawyers throughout the
state. When they learn I am
from Newberry, they invariably
ask about Judge Griffith and
they all hold him in highest
regard.
This record stems not only
from his fairness and ability,
but also from his refusal to go
along with a scheme which
would have benefited him per
sonally. Back several years
ago, there was a collaboration
between the state bar associa
tion and the legislature which
would have allowed judges to
resign anti immediately be re
elected at a higher salary. The
law provided that the salary
of a judge could not be in
creased or decreased during
the term for which he was
elected. Judge Griffith was
