Mrs. Caldwell
died last week
Mrs. Anna Viola McCollum
Caldwell, 72, died last Tuesday
at the Newberry County Me
morial hospital after several
weeks serious illness.
Mrs. Caldwell was born and
reared in this county and was
the daughter of the late John
and Emma Adams McCollum.
She had made her home in Po
maria for a number of years
and was a member of Victory
Baptist church in Pomaria.
Mrs. Caldwell is survived by
her husband Robert M. Cald
well, Pomaria; three sons, J.
R. Caldwell, Newberry, Thos.
Alden Caldwell, Columbia; Ce
cil M. Caldwell, Lexington and
eight daughters, Mrs. Ralph
Wicker, Pomaria; Mrs. Ernest
Bogan, Greenville; Mrs. Ellen
C. Ringer, Mrs. Clyde Wicker,
both of Pomaria; Mrs. Otis
Eddings, Camden; Mrs. Wayne
Peake, Chenaugo Bridge, N. Y.
Mrs. Robert Rhodus, Camden,
Mrs. John Miller, Greenville;
one sister, Mrs. Lillie Adams,
West Columbia.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday from the McSwain
Funeral Home with Rev. Floyd
A. Paschall, Rev. J. D. Ste
phens, and Rev. H. B. Sight-
ler, conducting the service.
Interment was in Victory
Baptist church cemetery near
Pomaria.

shelter class
Twenty-five persons, repre
senting agencies and schools
in four Newberry County com
munities, Friday completed a
community fallout shelter an
alysis course under Civil De
fense sponsorship in Newberry.
Completion of the course,
conducted at Mollohon school,
qualified its registrants to un
dertake a survey of buildings
in Newberry county seeking
community shelters against
radioactive fallout.
The survey will mark the
next step in the program, code
named Operation CanDo, tc
find best available shelter for
all of Newberry county resi
dents in the event of nuclear
attack on this county.
Taking the course were gov
ernmental agencies and school
officials from Newberry, Pros
perity, Pomaria and Silver-
street.
The county Civil Defense
shelter officer, RADEF officer,
as well as representatives of
the Newberry city police and
fire departments and the coun
ty tax collection and extension
service offices were among
those completing requirements.
The course was taught by
Robert T. Tindal, professor of
civil engineering at the Uni
versity of South Carolina. Pur
poses of the community shel
ter program were outlined
Thursday at the beginning of
the course by State Civil De
fense Director Fred C. Craft
and Ross B. Miller, state com
munity shelter planning offi
cer.
Welcoming remarks were
given by David W. Morrison,
Newberry County Civil De
fense director.

City native’s
husband dies
News has been received here
of the passing Thursday of L.
Clifton Moise of Sumter.
Mr. Moise was the husband
of the late Marguerite Cromer
Moise, daughter of the late
George B. and Carolyn Motte
Cromer of Newberry.
Funeral services were held
at Rosemont cemetery Friday
afternoon.
County native
dies Sunday
SPARTANBURG—Mrs. Me
linda Sheppard Bell, 71, of
1020 Howard street, died Sun
day in a local hospital after
a long illness.
Native of Prosperity, daugh
ter of the late William Pierce
and Matilda Hawkins Sheppard
she was a Lutheran and a
member of the Loyal Starr.
Her husband, Ernest Merrell
Bell, died in 1960.
Funeral services were con
ducted Tuesday by Rev. B. L.
Williams and Rev. Z. L. Mad
den. Burial was in Greenlawn
cemetery.
Former city
resident dies
Wallace E. Wheeler, 57, of
Asheville, N. C. passed away
unexpectedly January 1 follow
ing a heart attack.
He was a Carolina Champion
Old Timer with 31 years ser
vice with the Company and
Assistant Manager of the wood
procurement department at
the time of his passing.
He spent a good deal of time
in the Newberry area in con
nection with his company. He
and his family are former res
idents of the city and they
have many friends here.
