SANDERS F I E L I) D A Y The radio, television and the daily newspapers have really had a field day this week what with Bobby Baker, Adam Clay ton Powell and Lester Maddox in the limelight. These notor ious events stole some of the thunder from the President’s State of the Union address but few people missed the fact that he is proposing a six per (amt surtax on income ’axes. Higher taxes an* unwelcome at any time, but especially at this time of year when many of us are poriny over those dreaded forms, discovering we have underestimated our tax and trying to scrape up the additional funds to send off to Uncle Sam before January 1 a lest we have to spend a while in jail. There is no necessity for ncreasiny taxes to raise four or five billion dollars. That much — and far more-—could easily he cut from the budget by abolishment of such fool ish and unnecessary programs as the so-called anti-poverty prop-rams, urban renewal pro prams, and a preat proportion of the aid-to-education pro prams not to mention the mon ey ’hat is thrown away by the povernment. for "foreipn aid" NOW is tin 1 time for you to take pen and I Kl pe r i n hand and w rite to your ('on gress- man , your Sen ators and to the Ibi- udent. Mr. Lake, who is also pres ident of the Newberry County Development Board, expressed that Board’s appreciation to the county delepation and the county commissioners for their cooperation. “I think we have reached a good poal as far as the city is concerned,” he said. He revealed that bro chures are soon to be distri buted in vital places extollinp thr merits of the Peak and Ubappells areas for location of industry. "Our poal is to lo cate a sizable plant in one of the county location.-,” he said. Council approved changing of budget figures to correct an error in the amount of about $r,ooo- Approved advertising of bids from cable television com panics which might wi.-h to operate in the e t y. I'll ree such companies have appeared hi‘fore council but one, Jeffer son Standard, withdrew its application for the present Jurors named Judge James H. City Manager Riebe rec ommended that Council hear from other companies before going forward with approving a cable television operation in Newberry. He reported that his investigation of CATV in other cities disclosed that there were some problems in "legal and control aspects" but that "once they have it, the public doesn’t want to give it up. Mr. Riebe ad vised that the city attorney be lieved it would ho necessary to have an enabling act passed by the legislature. No action was taken on the matter. Council aproved extending a 12-inch water main across Highway 7b in the vicinity of the drive-in theatre at a cost not to exceed $5()()0. Council also approved trans fer of $10,000 accumulation in the bond fund to the gvneral operating fund of the city. Discussions wore held about the extension of water and sewer lines in the Oakland area and lighting throughout the city.
