The radio, television and the
daily newspapers have really
had a field day this week what
with Bobby Baker, Adam Clay
ton Powell and Lester Maddox
in the limelight. These notor
ious events stole some of the
thunder from the President’s
State of the Union address but
few people missed the fact
that he is proposing a six per
(amt surtax on income ’axes.
Higher taxes an* unwelcome
at any time, but especially at
this time of year when many
of us are poriny over those
dreaded forms, discovering we
have underestimated our tax
and trying to scrape up the
additional funds to send off to
Uncle Sam before January 1 a
lest we have to spend a while
in jail.
There is no necessity for
ncreasiny taxes to raise four
or five billion dollars. That
much — and far more-—could
easily he cut from the budget
by abolishment of such fool
ish and unnecessary programs
as the so-called anti-poverty
prop-rams, urban renewal pro
prams, and a preat proportion
of the aid-to-education pro
prams not to mention the mon
ey ’hat is thrown away by the
povernment. for "foreipn aid"
