erasb, the many deaths from
automobile accident*. Another
prediction: these auto deaths
will not cease unto stringent
Ikensing laws are put into ef
fect and more important, until
the courts clamp down on drun
ken and speeding drivers.
And there was hopeful news,
reflected in the votes east in
the November General Elec
tion. For the first time in the
memory of anyone now living
the county elected two Repub
licans to represent them in the
state senate; one Republican
to represent them in Washing
ton and, if voters of Newberry
County had their way, the sec
ond senator in Washington
would also he a Republican.
The label, “Republican", is
perhaps a misnomer. The vot
ers had become tired of the
liberalism of the Democrat par
ty and cast their votes for con
servatives running under the
Republican label. A truly con
servative Democrat who could
denounce the national admini
stration would have fared as
well.
The hope lies in the fact
that people are finally begin
ning to wake up, to take an
interest in what is happening
to their country; they are be
ginning to find that their hard-
earned money which Uncle
Sam takes for taxes is being
wasted on foolish programs at
home and overseas; they are
learning that the present Su
preme Court is making pets of
criminals and communists; and
they are beginning to rebel at
the destruction of their coun
try.
Even on the local scene, the
populace rebelled against more
government control. By over
whelming majoMtv +he voters
defeated the so-called urban
renewal amendment which
would have allowed city coun
cil, or body appointed by coun
cil, to take private property for
resale to private interests. For
a while at least they have re
served the right to sell or not
sell their property, as they see
fit. Prediction: if city govern
ment remains as it is present
ly constituted, look for an in.
creasing amount of propagan
da about the need for “urban
renewal" and the rosy pictures
which will be presented. Go
ahead and read it—but always
keep in the back of your mind

that it could be YOUR proper
ty that the government will
take, whether you like it or
not.
Knowing that measures such
as the “urban renewal" busi
ness could be introduced and
put to the people for vote
without the prior approval of
city council, I would urge that
during 1967, you pay particular
attention not only to actions of
council, but to actions of your
legislative delegation. Keep in
touch with what they’re doing
—then perhaps undesirable leg
islation can be nipped in the
bud.
It will be my purpose, as
far as possible, to fight the
things which I believe to be
undesirable but I remind you
again, I cannot do it alone.
Again 1 would urge you to
write to your Senators, your
Congressman, your state rep
resentatives, your city council.
Let them KNOW what you are
thinking—they aren't mind
readers. As long as you are si
lent, they assume you approve
their actions.
