MINE EYES HAVE
SEEN THE GLORY
And those that walked in darkness saw a
great light. . . The Star of the Prince of Peace"
Listen to the Salutation of the Dawn!
Look to this day !
For it is life, the very Star of Life.
In its brief course lie all the varieties and
realities of existence:
The bliss of growth;
The tflory <>f action;
The splendor of beauty;
For yesterday is already a dream,
and tomorrow is only a vision.
Hut today, well lived, makes every yesterday
A dream of happiness, and every tomorrow
a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day!
Such was the salutation of the Star of Dawn
on earth!

The Mummers
Were Outlawed
From earl y times in the
British Isles there were bands
of Mummers, masqueraders,
^uisers (going about in dis-
quise, reminiscent of an old
Roman custom at the Satur
nalia ) who went from hall to
hall, singing, dancing, or
staging rude plays. The latter
usually contained such char
acters as St. (ieorge, the Dra
gon, Hector, and Alexander
The (ireat.
In 1337, a "mummerie"was
given before Richard, son of
the Black Prince. When Henry
IV observed Christmas at
Kltham. he was visited by
twelve alderman and their sons
as mummers. Much later,
Henry VIII sent out a proc
lamation against mumming or
guising (a person could be
jailed for three months for this
offense) because many crimes,
even murders, were committed
during the mumming season.
DICKENS
Holiday o h s e r vane e had
reached a disturbing low in the
middle 19th century. When
Charles Dickens published his
now immortal “Christmas Carol",
though, he helped tremendously
to revive Christmas spirit
throughout the world but especi
ally in the. United States and
England.
Sacred Tree
The Christmas tree today is
a decoration, and an essential
one in most American homes.
But, trees have not always
been looked upon in the way
we see them today. In ancient
Greece, for example, the fir
was sacred to the worshippers
of Dionysius, and a branch
tipped with cones and twined
with ivy was carried in his
honor. The wood of the silver
fir was used in the ceiling of
Solomon’s temple.
