KIRKLAND Harvey Kirkland, head football coach and athletic director at Newberry College, has twice received the South Carolina “Coach of the Year” award. He won the title in 1953 on the strength of a 7-2 record, and repeated the honor in 1962 when Newberry’s 6-5 rec ord was called the “winningest” in the state Coach Kirkland received a B.S. degree from Newberry College in 1937. While in College he was considered an outstanding football and baseball player. He returned to his alma mater in 1952 as coach after a suc cessful coaching career at Summerville.
