CHRISTMAS HYMN 1966
The first Christmas hymns with
the traditional light tone were
born in Italy among the early
Franciscan monks. A more se
rious work, “Jesus Refulsit Om
nium”, (Jesus, Light of All the
Nations), is the earliest known
Christmas hymn. It was written
by Saint Hilary of Poitiers in the
4th Century.
Silver Decorations
Silvered berries, leaves, seed
pods and sprays of ivy may be
made by pouring a small
amount of aluminum paint into
a deep container almost filled
with water. The paint floats
on the water. Dip the mater
ial to be silvered into the
water and draw it out slowly.
Hold it over the container until
it has stopped dripping. Then
hang it in a dry place for 24
hours. Aluminum paint for
metal surfaces works best.
Welcome the New, Remember the Old
We come to a New Year.
Providence passes to each of us a new,
clean slate. We have the opportunity, dur
ing the 365 days ahead, to record our own
individual achievements. This is the way
we paint the New Year—time for a new
start, with a clean slate.
Before we make our first marks for 1966,
however, let's not turn completely aside
from 1965. Let us look backward with an
appraising eye. We cannot merely wipe
away our uncompleted assignments because
the date on the calendar has been changed.
The things that needed doing yesterday, if
undone, need doing today, or tomorrow.
They are still with us. They won't go away
merely because we ignore them.
This is as it should be. If we achieve any
thing in 1966, it shall be due to the fact that
our starting point took into consideration
all our successes, achievements and failures
during 1965. It is a New Year, yet we as in
dividuals are not reborn. We are the same,
with the same strength, with the same weak
nesses.
So, let us welcome the New Year. Let us
welcome the opportunity that it provides.
But, at the same time, let us be thankful for
the experiences of 1935. We are not starting
from nowhere, or from nothing. We have
things that need doing in the year ahead.
