Vacation Good
Christmas Gift
Some women want minks . . .
others want new kitchen sinks ...
but there’s one gift all the gals
appreciate because they all need
it — a rest, a change of pace, a
holiday!
Ever try to figure out how
many miles the little woman
walks while walloping rugs, quiet
ing wailing kids and getting
the meals and marketing done?
About 1.825 miles a year! The
daily grind deserves a reward —
and what’s better than letting
others do the cooking for the
little woman?
COOKIE CUSTOM
Th'' popularity of cakes and
cookies at Christmas may be a
survival of an early Roman cus
tom. On Saturanla, the Roman
mid-winter holiday, each Roman
senator was given a confection
to celebrate the coming of spring.
The delightful custom of decora
tive sweets continued into Chris
tian times. A German favorite
is Pfeflerkuchen, a hard, round,
spicy cookie made in great quan
tity at Christmas. Scandinavian
women spend days baking pas
tries for the holidays. French like
cakes baked in the form of a choc
olate Yule log and Rumanians
make their cakes in folds, sym
bolic of the swaddling clothes of
the Christ Child.
Beware
Holiday Hazards
Surround Home
Christmas is the time to be
jolly — but sad statistics show
that it is also the time for an
alarming increase in home acci
dents. To keep your holidays safe
as well as happy, here are some
hazards to look out for:
♦TOYS — Air rifles, archery
sets, dart games, hunting knives
and chemistry sets make wonder
ful Christmas gifts — but they
can be crippling weapons in the
'hands of children too young to
understand the hazards involved.
Even older children should have
adult supervision when playing
with equipment of this type.
Babies and toddlers invariably
follow the rule, “from hand to
mouth.” When selecting their
Christmas toys, therefore, care
fully avoid small objects, marbles,
coins or beads, balloons, plastic
bags, whistles with removable
mouthpieces and pull-toys with
removable parts. According to the
National Safety Council, more
than 600 children under five years
old die each year as a result of
suffocation from the ingestion of
these small objects.
Parents also should see to it
that Christmas toys are sturdy
and well-made. Cheaply con
structed or breakable toys will
come apart or break under stren
uous play, inviting cuts, infection
and sometimes even deadly
wounds. A simple test for toy
sturdiness is to bend it slightly
yourself first. If you can bend
it easily you can bet that your
four-year-old will be able to de
stroy it.
DICKENS
Holiday observance had
reached a disturbing low in the
middle 19th century. When
Charles Dickens published' his
now immortal “Christmas Carol”,
though, he helped tremendously
to revive Christmas spirit
throughout the world but especi
ally in the United States and
England.
FRUIT CAKES
Fruit cakes can be kept almost
indefinitely if they’re properly
wrapped and stored. Simply
sprinkling orange juice over the
cake periodically keej>s it from
drying out and adds a touch of
flavor as well.
