Mistletoe Magic
Britain’s early Druids be
lieved mistletoe could heal dis
ease, neutralize poisons and
protect against witchcraft.
They wore charm bracelets and
rings made of mistletoe, and
fastened the plant over door
ways to their homes. The Scan
dinavian goddess Frigga re
portedly made mistletoe an
emblem of love and granted
some lucky man a kiss beneath
its branches — perhaps the
start of the custom we know
so well today.
KIDS & CUSTOMS
While American children are
putting their gifts beneath the
tree, Slavic youngsters go to sleep
on a bed of straw and hay on
Christmas Eve. to share in
Christ’s humble birth. A special
treat for kids of some generations
ago might be the privilege of a
ride on the Yule Log as it was
dragged into the manor or
castle. A favorite game was Snap
dragon—in w hich players tried to
snatch a raisin from a bowd of
burning spices and spirits.
PLEASING GIFT
We give a gift in the hope it
will be appreciated. We should
then realize that there is little
correlation between amount spent
and good taste. We’ve all been
in homes where the prized —
and most expensive — possession
left us cold. Take pains to insure
that what you’re buying isn’t so
highly stylized that it will shortly
be outdated. Whether it’s house
hold merchandise or personal pos
session, keep its lines simple and
clean. When in doubt, consult
the salesman.
W ELCOME WINDOW'' GlFT FOR MOTHER
Let your picture window wel
come guests to your home. Place
a candle, a wreath or a spray of
evergreen in the window, remem
bering at the same time that too
much of any of these will spoil
the effectiveness of your window.
The children might enjoy trying a
stained-glass effect with easily-
washed-off colorings and artificial
snow' sprays. A real treat for*
children is working with lumi
nous paints; they enjoy admiring
their handiwork on those snowy,
blowy nights.
Mom may need a floor waxer
—but Christmas is not the time
to give it to her. No matter how
practical she may be, mom would
much prefer to receive something
frivolous — something she
wouldn’t ordinarily buy for her
self. It need not be expensive
like mink or diamonds, even
though they’re always nice. A
tiny vial of utterly extravagant
perfume is a likely winner. So
is a be-ribboned or be-frilled
house coat — and maybe oodles
and oodles of delicious-smelling
