AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
The social security district of
fice in Greenwood will remain op
en from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday,
December 10 and December 17,
and from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Sat
urday, December 18 for the con
venience of residents of the area.
Miss Martha F. Pressly, social
security district manager, said
today. These evening hours are in
addition to the regular 9 to 5 p.m.
schedule of office hours, Monday
through Friday.
Miss Pressly pointed out that
it is important for many people
to get in touch with the district
office to take advantage of the
health insurance and other pro
visions of the 1965 amendments to
the social security program.
Although most people are able
to visit the office during the day,
many find it impossible to do so
because of employment or home
responsibilities.
The three major groups of peo
ple who should get in touch with
the social security office are the
following, Miss Pressly said:
1. People who are now 65 or
older but who are not entitled to
social security benefits. Some of
these people are eligible for ben
efits but have not applied for
them because they are still work
ing full time. Miss Pressly em
phasized that it is desirable for
these people to apply now to es
tablish their social security bene
fit rights and to qualify for the
hospital insurance protection that
begins in July 1966. She empha
sized that no one can lose by ap
plying for benefits as soon as he
reaches 65 (those who retire be
tween 62 and 65 may receive cash
benefits but in a permanently re
duced amount. They are not eli
gible for hospital insurance until
they reach 65.)
Many of the people 72 or older
are not now getting benefits be-

cause they (or their husband) had
not worked enough under social
security to qualify. Many of these
people will now be eligible for
cash benefits because the new law
reduces the amount of work re
quired for most people 72 or older.
2. W T idows 60 or 61 years of
age who under the old law would
have been eligible for widows ben
efits at age 62. They may now
apply for social security benefits
as early as age 60 if they wish to
accept a permanently reduced
amount.
3. Unmarried students 18 to 22
years of age whose social security
benefits have been stopped, and
students who receive social se
curity benefits and are nearing
age 18, and who plan to continue
in school. Upon application mon
thly benefits can be paid back to
January 1965 tounmarried stu
dents who were under 22 in Jan
uary 1965 and who were dropped
from the social security rolls when
they reached 18.
The Greenwood social security
office is at 619 S. Main street.
