In fleet games
USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63)
(FHTNC) October 12 — Chief
Storekeeper Lloyd A, Forsyth,
USN, son of Mr. Bryan Forsyth
of Route 1, Prosperity participated
in First Fleet Training exercise
“Ragweed” while serving aboard
the attack aircraft carrier USS
Kitty Hawk.
The seven day exercise, con
ducted off the coast of Southern
California, involved 34 ships of
the First Fleet and several naval
air and amphibious units, compris
ing “friendly forces” in aerial
reconnaissance, surface anti-sub
marine, anti-air and amphibious
warfare operations against “en
emy” air, ground, surface and
sub-surface forces, portrayed by
other navy units, to increase the
combat readiness of the First
Fleet.
Indians smarting
from Furman loss
“We expected to have a rough
time with Furman, but we didn’t
expect to give it away on cheap
touchdowns,” said Newberry’s
Head Coach Harvey Kirkland after
losing Saturday night 48-12. Fur-
ma.i had Newberry 35-6 in the
first half and increased the mar
gin by two more touchdowns in
the second half.
Fumbles, pass interceptions, and
a muffed punt plagued the In
dians worse than injuries last Sat
urday night. Furman capitalized
on all of these mistakes to score in
the first set of plays after receiv
ing the “gifts” from the Indians.
Paladin quarterback, Sammy
Wyche, fired four touchdown
passes to end Tim Crawford and
shot holes in Newberry’s ailing
pass defense.
The Indians made use of a host
of freshmen to aid the ground
game and turned out with 185
yards in the rushing department.
