Income Tax Tips
Prizes and awards are generally
taxable and the fair market value
must be included in gross income
on tax returns, Harold McLeod,
District Director of Internal Rev
enue for Columbia, reminded tax
payers today. Examples of prizes
and awards which are reportable
include items received from radio
and television give-away shows,
contests, door prizes, raffles, lot
teries and sweepstakes.
Shares of stock, building lots,
merchandise, World Fair Tours,
and vacation trips to luxury re
sort areas received by employees,
salesmen, dealers, corporation of
ficers and others are taxable too.
These awards are usually received
in connection with sales contests
and promotion programs.

McLeod emphasized that the
fair market value of trips, ser
vices, or merchandise received is
the amount to be included as tax
able income. This applies even if
the recipient disposes of such
items by gift, or otherwise. How
ever, McLeod stated that where a
taxpayer does not accept an aw
ard, its value does not have to be
included in taxable income.
Although taxpayers are general
ly aware that cash awards are
taxable, McLeod stated that In
ternal Revenue is becoming con
cerned over misunderstanding by
taxpayers who have received non
cash incentive awards and who
have either omitted or understat
ed their value for Federal income
tax purposes.
McLeod said an enforcement
program designed to increase tax
payer compliance in the prize a-
ward area is already in effect.
Taxpayers desiring further infor
mation about taxable awards
should contact the Internal Reve
nue Service.
He added that Social Security
benefits are not taxable and
should not be reported as income
on your Federal income tax re
turn.
Social Security benefits, how
ever, are used in computing the
retirement income credit and also
are important in determining a
claim for a dependency exemption.
When an individual receives
Social Security benefits which are
less than one-half of his total
support, McLeod added, your con
tribution toward his support may
entitle you to claim him as a de
pendent. Remember, you must fur
nish more than half of the depen
dent’s total support for the year.
