The Good Witch ^
Visits Italy’s Young
It is on January 6, the Feast
of the Epiphany, and not on
Christmas Eve that Italian chil
dren place their shoes by the
fireplace. The shoes are placed in
anticipation of the arrival of
“Befana”, the good witch, who
comes, down the chimney on a
broom to fill the shoes left out
for her — sweets for the good
youngsters, coal in the shoes of
the naughty.
French Observance
Features Manger Scene
Many French homes have not
only the Christmas tree but as
well the traditional Creche, or
manger scene, populated with
terra cotta figures called santons.
Midnight Mass is a tradition with
French Catholics and when they
return home they take part in
the Reveillon, an elaborate feast
of many courses. Before retiring,
French children place their shoes
near the fireplace in anticipation
of a visit from “Pere Noel.”
IN MEXICO
During the holiday season in
Mexico, the greeting is “Feliz
Navidad” and almost every home
boasts a nacimento, or creche.
Some are elaborate, many are
simple and homemade, yet each
is a manger scene complete with
the traditional figures of Jesus,
Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise
Men, shepherds, animals and the
Star of Bethlehem.
Tips To Guide
Selection Of
Best Holiday Tree
What species of evergreen is
best for use as a Christmas tree?
Here are some facts about the
most common species which may
be helpful in selecting the right
tree for your home:
Balsam fir — once the most
commonly used, is now relatively
scarce. It has short, flat, dark
green needles attached to oppo
site sides of the limbs in a feath
er-like arrangement.
Top Tree
Douglas fir — the top commer
cial tree. It has blue-green or
dark yellow-green needles, soft
and pliable, attached all the way
around the limbs, giving it a
bushy, full appearance.
Scotch pine — long needled
variety. It has needles which are
arranged in clusters on the
branches. It holds it needles ex
ceptionally well.
Black spruce — a hardy tree,
but has a dark, un-Christmasy
color. It is widely used for dyed
and treated trees.
White spruce — another hardy,
attractive tree, but unfortunately
it gives off an unpleasant odor.
Some things to look for in se
lecting a tree: retention of
needles; full symmetrical shape;
limbs without sagging; fragrant
odor, springy branches.

Each holiday season, thou
sands of visitors turn their foot
steps toward the Church of the
Nativity in Bethlehem. People of
many faiths make the annual
trip to Bethlehem, now a part of
Jordan to visit the church which
is above the Grotto of the Na
tivity where Christ was born.
The Church of the Nativity is
shared by Roman Catholic, Greek
Orthodox and Armenian denom
inations. Roman Catholics cele
brate first, with masses on Christ
mas Eve, December 25. Eastern
churches observe Christ’s birth
day in January, as also do the
Greek Orthodox, who still follow
the Julian calendar.
Protestants traditionally gather
in Shepherds Fields, the nearby
site where tradition says the an
gels came down to tell the shep
herds of the Holy Birth.
CHRISTMAS “FISH 1 *
In Newfoundland it is custom
ary for the folks to “fish for the
church,” during Christmas week.
They bring their catch to be sold
for the local parish.
