FOR AND ABOUT TEENAGERS By C. D. Smith
Girl Feels She Is “Coorting” Trouble
THE WEEK’S LETTER: “Do
all teenagers have serious prob
lems? I believe I am in love
with a boy older than myself, yet
wonder if it isn’t just a physical
attraction. We want, both of us,
to further our education, but all
be talks about is love and getting
married, — love now, marriage
later. I have been sneaking out
to meet him, telling lies to my
parents, who have been so good
to me. He has even suggested I
come and visit him when he is in
another city. My better self tells
me I am “courting’’ trouble. And,
I wonder if I am too weak to use
good judgment. He thinks his
suggestions are all right as far
as modern morals are concerned.”
OUR REPLY: He wants you to
think his suggestions are “all
right.” He knows better and so
do you. Each individual sets his
own concept of moral behavior.
Your problem is not unique.
You are, indeed, “courting”
trouble. And, each time you
“sneak out,” tell a lie, or do
something with which your con
science does not agree, you are
paying another installment on fu
ture trouble and disappointment.
“Modem morals” is a meaning
less phrase. Right is right; wrong
is wrong. It has been so since the
beginning of time. The individual
who breaks the law and gets
caught, is certain to be punished
for this offense. He may presefat
what he considers a valid excuse
when he has his day in court, yet
the circumstances are not likely
to be so extenuating that the
judge will overlook the fact that
the law has been broken and that
he is required to pass sentence
upon the offender.
You have good judgment. Use

tOt AND ABOUT TEENAGERS By C. D. Smith
THE WEEK’S LETTER: “Some
times I ask myself, what is the
matte? with teenagers today? I
consider myself a normal, healthy,
15-year-old girl, with a marvelous
set of parents. Oh, we sometimes
argue. We wouldn’t be human if
we didn’t—but twice a month is
rare. My parents know much
more than I, so when they speak,
I listen. If more teenagers would
try this, they would learn. Learn
what you say? Mainly learn that
your parents want to help you,
not hinder you. You can learn
right from wrong, learn to respect
and to love. When my parents
start to “holler” at me, I take it,
apologize, then forget. It’s such
a simple way of life. Whenever
I get the urge to go against my
parents, I stop and think. I really
do love them and someday they
won’t be around to be nice to.
Why wait till that day to be
sorry? Then it will be too late.
Give this method a try, you teen
agers; it has never failed me
yet.”
OUR COMMENT: Where could
you find better advice? This letter
was written by someone who has
more-than-the-average 15-year-old
wisdom and understanding. The
teenager who has respect for the
authority and the wisdom of par
ents has taken a big step down
the road to maturity and strength
of character. Teenagers who re
sent the authority and supervision
that must be exercised by ^the
right kind of parents are, in a
way, refusing to grow up. They
can’t seem to understand that just
about every privilege that comes
along has some responsibility con
nected with it.
Some teenagers want to be
“free” to do whatever pleases
them when it pleases them; in a
sense “free” of any responsibility.
If you have a teenage problem yoa want
to discuss, or an observation to make,
address your letter to FOR AND ABOUT
